Birmingham Water Works is Hiring a Plant operator Near Birmingham, AL
General Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain sludge pumps and related feed equipment
- Responsible for daily work for monthly chemical and operation figures
- Maintain inventory of replacement parts
- Move sludge from settling basins and assist in cleaning of basins
- Inspect dump trucks and order chemicals for the operation of the Solids Dewatering Plant
- Service dewatering equipment and perform regular maintenance
- Inspect equipment used in the dewatering department and maintain record logs
- Responsible for dewatering treatment residuals and returning water to the head plant
- Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management
- Perform other duties as assigned..

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :
- Valid Driver’s license required
- Commercial Driver’s License B required
- Fit Test for Respirator purposes required
- Passing grade on BWW Entrance Exam for Water Treatment Plants required
Supervision
None
Experience
Two (2) years of maintenance or related experience required. Experience in operating a dump truck is required. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of introductory chemistry and math, understand procedures and regulations and apply them to coordinate specific activities;
must have clerical and numerical perception.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods
- Reaching by excreting hand(s) or arms(s) in any direction
- Finger dexterity is required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard
- Communication skills using the spoken word
- Ability to see within normal parameters
- Ability to hear within normal parameters
- Ability to move about
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to scale a ladder
Work Environment
Loud noise; indoors and outdoors, exposed to extreme hot / cold weather conditions and hazardous chemicals.
