Description

The Staff Learning & Inclusion Coordinator will assist in developing, organizing, facilitating, and tracking staff training and professional development for Birmingham Zoo team members. This position will also help drive the implementation and advancement of Birmingham Zoo’s diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) initiatives and action plan.

DUTIES

  1. Work within DEAI Committee to implement and advance BZI’s DEAI Action Plan to cultivate a diverse and inclusive work environment for staff and guest experiences for all members of communities we serve
  2. Serve as a resource for staff to implement and move toward the Zoo’s strategic vision of DEAI
  3. Maintain knowledge of current issues and best practices regarding DEAI and professional learning
  4. Assist in researching, developing, recommending, and executing creative strategies to foster the organization’s DEAI and staff learning goals
  5. Maintain, update, schedule, and facilitate the Zoo’s in-house employee learning program, including: conducting surveys; implementing training needs assessments; scheduling and facilitating trainings such as new employee onboarding, new hire onboarding, and customer service training; and tracking training attendance and participation
  6. Ensure appropriate and required record-keeping for AZA accreditation, USDA licensing, and other certifications or distinctions
  7. Develop and maintain a tracking system for all required and optional training, providing updates as needed
  8. Collect, analyze, and keep record of organizational data to demonstrate progress toward DEAI goals
  9. Assist with reviewing current practices and policies, assessing and analyzing the extent to which they support or hinder BZI DEAI goals
  10. Collaborate with Human Resources to plan, develop, coordinate, organize, implement, and/or assist with staff events, wellness and wellbeing resources, and recognition initiatives and programs
  11. Solicit and respond to employee communication and feedback through such avenues as Zoo meetings, suggestion programs, employee feedback surveys, staff focus groups, one-on-one meetings, etc.
  12. Work proactively to advance a team spirit and positive work climate among Zoo employees, closely monitor the morale of staff and take appropriate action to resolve issues
  13. Assist other teams under Learning & Inclusion department (as well as other departments throughout the Zoo) with training, planning, collaboration, team-building, and other tasks, when available
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. May support supervision of interns and volunteers, as assigned

SAFETY ANALYSIS

The Staff Learning & Inclusion Coordinator may be impacted by hazardous exposures common to an office environment as well as public safety in an outdoor environment.

Thorough understanding of guest safety protocols, particularly with young children is required.

Specific training and procedures will be provided, designed to maintain safety of people as the highest priority of the zoo followed by the safety of the animal collection.

The use and understanding of a variety of personal safety equipment is mandatory.

All employees of the Zoo are required to be familiar with the Zoo’s overall safety policies as outlined in the employee handbook as well as being responsible for reporting any injury immediately to the first aid department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee should expect:

  • Use of tools or controls
  • Frequent and long stretches of sitting and/or remaining stationary
  • Ability to work on a computer
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, visitors, vendors, and guests
  • Frequent walking or moving long distances across the Zoo, across various terrains and inclines
  • Ability to access and move items high up or low to the ground
  • Routine lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds
  • Exposure to wet surfaces
  • Frequent exposure to the elements, sometimes including extreme heat, cold, and precipitation
  • Ability to travel to off-site for work

Qualifications


The Birmingham Zoo recognizes that skills and knowledge come from both formal and informal experiences including education, paid work, volunteer service, and life experience. Those who meet the majority of the requirements for a position are encouraged to apply.

  1. Degree or certification in education, non-profit administration, DEAI (diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion), organizational development, or related field OR 3 years work experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a position which included administration, corporate training development, public speaking, and/or presentations to adults.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  1. Exceptional communication and public speaking/presentation skills
  2. Ability to facilitate discussions and adult learning programs
  3. Demonstrated ability to organize and direct programs in an effective manner
  4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  5. Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team to achieve goals and meet deadlines
  6. Customer service and/or guest experience knowledge and skills
  7. Competency in computer skills, including presentation software/programs
  8. Knowledge of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) concepts and positive culture development within the workplace
  9. Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork within and across teams
  10. Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with a diversity of groups and individuals
  11. Ability to multi-task and coordinate with others to provide deliverables on an agreed upon deadline
  12. Ability to think critically and demonstrated time-management skills
  13. Strong commitment to advancing DEAI

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be willing to occasionally travel locally.
  2. Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations within the last five years to operate Zoo vehicles.

  1. Full time
  2. Mainly weekdays with some weekends required; occasional evening work and holidays
