Position Highlights
Cardiothoracic Surgery Stepdown Nurses support the care continuum for the post-surgical cardiac patient such as heart transplant, valve repair/replacement, endocarditis, coronary artery bypass, transapical or transcutaneous valve replacement (TAVR/TVIV) and aortic aneurysm repair. Nurses provide specialized acute care in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. It is recognized as a Center of Excellence for left ventricular assist device implantation and management and care of the patient after heart transplantation surgery. Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions. Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patients progress from the immediate post-op period through discharge. Barnes-Jewish is consistently ranked as one of the top cardiac hospitals in the country, and performs the regions highest volumes of heart procedures, which results in superior outcomes for cardiac patients.

Role Purpose
Under the direction of manager, plans, directs, and coordinates activities of a unit on a designated shift. Performs direct patient care as needed and functions as clinical resource to nursing and support staff. Assesses, plans, evaluates and documents the nursing process of assigned unit as needed.
