BMBFA optimizes the first food experience through direct service, training and advocacy.About The RoleBlack Mothers Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) is seeking a proven professional for their Communications Specialist who is willing to commit to the organization for the long-term. In this role, you will: (i) meaningfully contribute to the reduction of racial disparities in breastfeeding and maternal child health outcomes for Black families; (ii) help advance an organization that provides their communities with the education, resources, and support to make impactful change; (iii) be supported by administration and program staff; and, (iv) in alignment with BMBFA’s mission, the public relations manager is responsible for embodying the voice of BMBFA to coordinate, manage and execute all communications and marketing plans and activities. Essential Job Performance Duties/Objectives
  • Content Creation: Develop and produce high-quality written and visual content for various communication channels, including press releases, blog posts, social media updates, and internal communications. Ensure that all content aligns with the organization's brand voice, values, and strategic goals.
  • Media Relations: Cultivate relationships with media outlets and journalists to secure positive coverage. Prepare and distribute press releases, respond to media inquiries, and coordinate interviews with key organizational spokespersons.
  • Social Media Management and Marketing: Develop and implement social media strategies to increase the organization's online presence. Monitor social media channels, engage with followers, and respond to comments or inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Plan and execute social media advertising campaigns on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Internal Communication: Collaborate with internal teams to facilitate effective communication within the organization. Develop and implement internal communication plans, including newsletters, memos, and announcements.
  • Crisis Communication: Develop crisis communication plans and strategies to address potential issues and manage the organization's reputation during challenging times.
  • Event Coordination: Collaboratively plan and coordinate communication-related events, such as product launches, press conferences, and community outreach programs.
  • Analytics and Reporting: Monitor and analyze the performance of communication strategies using metrics and analytics tools. Provide regular reports and insights to evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts and make data-driven improvements.
  • Brand Management: Ensure consistent branding across all communication channels. Enforce brand guidelines to maintain a unified and professional image.
  • Digital Marketing and SEO: Develop and implement digital marketing strategies, including Google Ads campaigns, to increase online visibility and drive traffic to the organization's website. Utilize SEO best practices to optimize website content and improve search engine rankings. Monitor and analyze the performance of digital marketing efforts, adjusting strategies as needed to maximize reach and engagement.
  • Website Content Management: Oversee and manage the organization's website content, ensuring it is up-to-date, accurate, and aligned with the overall communication strategy.
  • Speech Writing: Craft compelling and articulate speeches for key executives, spokespersons, or organizational leaders, ensuring alignment with the organization's messaging and objectives.

  • Breastfeeding or human milk feeding experience

Education And Experience
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree; relevant areas (health communications, media, public relations, communications or similar).
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate or equivalent experience.
  • Experience using social media platforms for social change; LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Experience with paid social media marketing analytic tools.
  • Experience using Google Workspace or Google Drive, Canva, Monday.com, JotForm, Zapier, DocuSign, Tovuti, WordPress, Zoom, ClickSend and Constant Contact; OR similar software/programs.
  • Experience in the maternal-child-health field; preferred emphasis on breastfeeding.
  • Strong and deep understanding of the principles of racial equity/justice.
  • Strong and deep understanding of community-centered approach.
Lived Experience (Preferred)
  • Breastfeeding / breast pumping experience
  • Intimate connection to the Detroit community
Compensation
  • $26-$30/hour, commensurate with experience
