Position Title: Laboratory Technologist- Lead

Effective Date: 5/8/2024

Reports To: Lab Supervisor

Position status: Non- Exempt Full Time

Primary Function:

The Lab Technologist Lead supports and coordinates their direct reports in the Lab Team on assay production, as assigned. The Lab Technologist Lead leads their team by example, exhibiting positive leadership and showing maturity, with the capacity to multitask calmly during stressful situations. The Lab Technologist Lead communicates effectively with the rest of the Lab Team, the General and Technical Supervisors, and the Lab Manager about both personnel and production matters, as pertains to their job. The Lab Technologist Lead must complete training on laboratory assays and be able to train their direct reports on the Lab Team, as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and directs a team of Lab Technologists and/or Lab Technicians.
  • Provides on-the-spot coaching to direct reports. Escalates to Supervisor when necessary.
  • Recognizes unusual patient results and identifies problems in analytical procedures/systems; responds with appropriate investigation and/or corrective action.
  • Troubleshoots assays and equipment which fail to perform adequately.
  • Manage the daily backlog and prioritize the workload.
  • Observes established safety guidelines and maintains cleanliness of the laboratory.
  • Keeps a meticulous and organized record of specimens, tests, instrument logs, and technical analyses.
  • Maintains stringent standards for quality, identifying any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety, and communicating these to the appropriate management representatives as necessary for resolution.
  • Participates in activities required to support all necessary licensure for the clinical laboratory, including quality management functions and on-site inspections of the laboratory.
  • Maintains understanding and knowledge of the methods employed in the laboratory and the use of the resulting information by physicians through continuing education activities.
  • Consults with management and personnel on better operational procedures to improve overall efficiency and product yields.
  • Accurately documents and maintain all records for equipment and instruments.
  • Supports the administrative functions of the lab as required.
  • All other reasonable duties, as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Mental Abilities and Skills Requirements-

  • Ability to effectively lead a team.

  • Ability to facilitate inter and intra-departmental communication.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, quality control applications, word processing, specifically spreadsheets.
  • Ability to multitask and coordinate multiple projects/ assignments simultaneously, completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Ability to adapt in a constantly changing environment, working under tight deadlines.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze and solve basic issues.
  • Ability to take initiative, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and work in a team environment.

Knowledge Needed-

  • Required experience with:
    • Robotics
    • Sterile technique
    • Data analysis
  • Knowledge of basic clinical laboratory skills.
  • Knowledge of detailed laboratory techniques specific to their assigned laboratory
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrates exceptional understanding of the elements that support high quality work processes, training, and quality assurance in molecular biology laboratories.
  • Prior experience in Quality required, with knowledge of CLIA regulations and CAP requirements preferred.

Education and Certification:

Education/Experience Requirements-

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences with a minimum of 2 years of clinical lab experience (this is applicant specific and can be based on performance at MTL).

Certifications-

  • N/A

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit or stand for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach and move about facilities.

Work Environment:

VANCOUVER OFFICE - Some work will be performed in an office.

LAB POSITIONS - Most work will be performed in the lab. Workweeks usually consist of 40 hours.

Office Environment-

  • Several common areas and meeting rooms for collaboration
  • Large windows which let in natural light during working hours
  • Fully equipped break room and bathrooms.

Lab Environment -

  • Noise levels vary based on flow of business.
  • Most floors are tile or concrete - individuals may stand for extended periods of time on these surfaces.

Tools and Technology:

  • Desktop computer and laptop
  • Scanners and printers

Hazards:

  • Most time is spent in the laboratory. Employees may be exposed to potential physical harm from hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, toxic materials, toxic gases, electrical hazards, dangerous tools, and equipment. Therefore, proper PPE must be worn at all times in the lab.
  • Hep B Vaccination provided at no cost to employee.
