Position: Direct Support Professional - Block Institute Adult Day Services
Are you committed to supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in achieving their goals and building meaningful lives? Join our team at the Block Institute Day Program and play a pivotal role in providing essential support and guidance to individuals as they navigate their journey towards personal growth and independence.
As a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at Block Institute's Adult Day Program, you'll work collaboratively to provide tailored support and advocacy for people with Intellectual and Development Disabilities. You will assist in various program areas to ensure individuals receive the necessary care and encouragement to thrive both within our program and in the community.
As a DSP you will be asked to:
- Provide personalized support to individuals, fostering an environment that promotes growth and independence.
- Assist individuals with daily activities and tasks, offering guidance and encouragement as they work towards achieving their goals.
- Accompany individuals on community outings, facilitating opportunities for socialization and community integration.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive support plans tailored to individual needs and aspirations.
- Maintain accurate documentation of individual progress and activities, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Foster a safe and inclusive environment where individuals feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential.
- Attend team meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and stay informed of best practices in the field.
- Demonstrate empathy, patience, and understanding in all interactions with individuals and colleagues.
- Adapt support strategies to meet the evolving needs and preferences of individuals, promoting autonomy and self-determination.
- Serve as a positive role model and advocate for individuals, advocating for their rights and preferences.

Job Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Valid NYS Driver's License is preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with co-workers, employees, residents, and their families.
  • Ability to analyze problems and determine corrective measures.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and sit. Specific vision abilities required by this bob. Ability to lift, move and position adults in beds, wheelchairs, toilets, showers, vans, etc. Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, and pushing and pulling of heavy objects such as furniture and/ or wheelchairs.
Education and/or Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Six months of related experience is preferred but not required
