National 501c4 nonprofit organization seeks experienced non-profit operations professional to join our State Affairs team as the Deputy Director, State Affairs. This is an exempt role.

ResponsibilitiesThe Deputy Director, State Affairs will work closely with the Vice President of State Affairs and regional directors to add operational capacity to BGA’s work advancing the alliance’s climate, jobs, and equity goals at the state level. As an internally focused position, the Deputy Director plans, manages and evaluates all operational aspects of BGA’s State Policy work. The Deputy Director is responsible for managing collaborative efforts across the State Policy team and national BGA departments to ensure strong integration between BGA’s State and Federal policy advocacy, communications, and partnership building. In coordination with organization management, the Deputy Director manages the State Policy Team’s annual planning, goal tracking, operations, staff development and training, and acts as a trusted advisor to staff colleagues.
The Deputy Director reports to the Vice President; with the potential to supervise up to 3 State Policy Advisors as department need arises.
Essential Duties Of This RoleStrategic Collaboration and Oversight:
  • Under the direction of the VP of State Affairs, and collaborating closely with the Western Regional Director and Midwest Regional Director provide operational oversight of BGA’s state policy work across 10 states;
  • Manage the annual planning process for the State Policy Team under direction of the VP of State Affairs to ensure strong integration between State Policy goals and activities with broader organizational goals;
Project Management And Team Coordination
  • In collaboration with the VP of State Affairs and the Deputy Executive Director, develop and oversee planning, metrics and goal-tracking related to the annual plan for the State Policy Team, coordinating with other departments including Development and Finance as they develop systems to track state work;
  • Coordinate with state and federal policy staff to develop processes ensuring the sharing of best policy practices across states;
  • Lead State Policy Team onboarding and training, including development and implementation of a new training program for State Policy staff in collaboration with the Director of People & Culture;
Organizational Development And Support
  • Work with the Director of People & Culture to strengthen State Affairs staff development, performance evaluation, and career path development;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias;
  • Develop and advance special projects as assigned by the VP of State Affairs;
  • Other duties as required.
RequirementsSKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to develop operations strategies and collaborative processes for remote teams to achieve advocacy and project goals;
  • Successful experience navigating organizational change;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a commitment to work quality;
  • Strong skills in developing mutually respectful, trusting, and effective internal and external relationships;
  • Exhibit positive and respectful manner with colleagues, partners, and allies;
  • Excellence in modelling giving and receiving constructive feedback;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, plan efficiently, and manage competing priorities;

  • Ability to travel as needed (up to 10% travel);
  • Ease with technology platforms and Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Strong commitment to economic, racial, and environmental justice and to building the labor movement;?and
  • A deep commitment to the mission of the BlueGreen Alliance;
ExperienceRequired
  • Minimum of six years of experience in campaign management, project management, or organizational planning and operations; or a combination of education and experience to exceed ten years;
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a remote environment;
  • Minimum of two years of experience in organizational development;
Preferred
  • Experience working in policy advocacy
  • Experience/knowledge working on issues related to climate change, environmental or labor issues
  • Project Management Certification
CompensationA compensation package including competitive salary with annual COLA increases and employer-funded benefits is available.
Salary The salary range is $110,000 - $125,000 yearly, exempt. BGA utilizes salary bands to ensure pay equity and transparency. Final salary within the salary range will be based on experience level and qualifications.
