Description

Foreman

Summary

Position responsible for managing the crew during the installation of a quality roof in a safe and efficient manner and ensuring the project is completed on time and under budget. This position is also responsible for performing roof inspections, safety inspections and over all knowledge of the job. The Foreman must understand the requirements of all major roofing types and should be well skilled in the management of roofing crews.

This position reports directly to a Superintendent.

This position is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct the daily onsite safety brief prior to the start of the job/project with the Account Manager, and Superintendent. Inspect and ensure all surroundings, equipment and tools and identify and discuss any safety concerns. Complete the Daily Safety Sheet form and submit to the Supervisors as applicable.
  • Maintain employee and site safety in OSHA compliance
  • Proper installation of all new roofing systems exactly as specified
  • Direct the crew; instruct employees, assign and allocate work
  • Document project progress and activities
  • Responsible for crew production and quality of workmanship
  • Maintain good customer relations
  • Requisition additional materials
  • Responsible for company issued equipment
  • Evaluate roof mechanics and helpers / laborers
  • Ensure all project communication is completed prior to the start of any project. This includes but is not limited to communication with:
    • Superintendent for a daily / weekly schedule
    • Crew members to discuss scope of work and daily tasks
    • Superintendent on schedule changes, project and crew update, etc
  • Efficient project management will include managing crew start and end times, production rates, ensuring tools and materials are available to safely and efficiently complete the assigned project. Complete the project per the scope or work or specification.
  • The Foreman will complete an end of day and/or end of project walk through to ensure quality repairs and address any items prior to leaving the job site. Before and after pictures will be sent to the Account Manager / Superintendent and information will be sent daily on project status. These items will include, detailed work performed updates, materials consumed and supplies purchases are all recording daily.
  • Ensure that all crew have a professional appearance
  • Ensure any customer interaction (by a crew member or the Foreman) is always relayed to the Superintendent immediately
  • The Foreman is responsible for the ordering, tracking and monitoring inventory
  • Manage, monitor and document performance of Journeymen and Laborers and take appropriate steps or corrective measures to resolve employee and work related issues. Consult with Superintendent and Human Resources as needed.
  • Perform any other duty and/or project as required or assigned by the Superintendent and/or Regional Branch Manager or COO.

Initially:

  • Set up ground safety and cone of areas needed prior to the arrival of the crew and materials.
  • Be at the property for delivery of equipment and materials at the start of the project
  • Obtain the material receiver slip for the materials being delivered. (This could be ongoing throughout the project)
  • Verify that every item and quantity on the receiver is actually in the delivery being received. If an item is on the receiver, and is not delivered, the item should be noted on the receiver as “not delivered”.
  • Review the scope of work (NOA, contract or input sheet as needed), ask the branch manager or account manager any for any clarification needed

Daily:

  • Check in with the management office to let them know we are there, what building(s) we are working on, ask if there were any issues reported by the residents or property staff and resolve any issues.
  • Verify safety is properly set up.
  • Verify that the crew is on the proper building and is performing the proper scope of work.
  • Determine if there are any materials that are not onsite that will be needed that day or in the next few days to come.
  • Contact the branch or account manager if any materials are needed and arrange for their delivery. The superintendent should not leave the jobsite.
  •  At all breaks, instruct the crew to clean up the grounds below the work area as needed. Clean the grounds personally as needed.
  • Several times daily, inspect the crews work (check fastening patterns, welds, sealant at penetrations, any detail that has been spelled out in the scope of work to ensure that it is completed properly). Ensure that the crew has not torn off more work than can be made watertight that day.
  • Nearing the end of the day, begin giving the crew instructions on items that must be completed prior to the crew leaving the property
  • Before the crew is allowed to leave the property, ensure that all details are completed and water cutoffs are in place to ensure that the roof is watertight overnight.

Experience/Qualifications/Education Preferences

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Minimum 5 years experience with commercial high and low slope roofing experience
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with SP (EPDM, TPO, PVC), BUR, foam, shingle, tile and metal roofing systems
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program
  • Experience managing crews
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility to work in the U.S.

Lift minimum of 50 lbs, standing for long periods of time. Vision abilities to include: distance, close, color, depth, and peripheral. Also the ability to adjust focus. Regular use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Must be able to climb ladders. Must be able to work at varying heights and in all weather.
