Salary Range: Entry rate of pay is approximately $32.96/hr; 39.24/hr full rate

Duties/ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for inspecting, rebuilding and repairing freight cars.
INSPECTING
  • Inspect railcar frames and bodies for holes, cracks, and other defects
  • Inspect safety appliances including hand holds, sill steps, grab iron, brake platforms, running boards
  • Inspect wheels to ensure that rim treads, plates, hub axles, and bearings are in good repair
  • Inspect air brake system to make sure equipment is in compliance with current regulations
REBUILDING AND REPAIR
  • Maintain, replace and repair air brake pipes, valves, gaskets, air hoses and other equipment
  • Operate electrical and gas welding equipment to join a variety of metals and alloys
  • Operate acetylene torches for cutting and/or shaping metal parts such as aluminum, cast iron, steel, and bronze
EQUIPMENT OPERATION
  • Operate specialized off-highway motor vehicles including forklift trucks, mobile cranes, track mobiles
CARMAN/ROAD TRUCK/EMERGENCY RESPONSE
  • Perform car repair on road truck in and away from origin point
  • CDL license DOT certification required ($0.25 differential applies for carmen assigned to Road Truck positions)
  • Perform work as assigned by Foreman
  • Respond to service interruptions and other transportation outages
  • Welding certification requirements will need to be obtained for the position

SHIFTS/HOURS
  • Full-time (40 hrs/wk)
  • Subject to seniority and governed by union agreement
  • Assigned shift may be one of three 8-hour shifts
  • Mechanical shops operate 24 hours/day, 7 days/week
TRAVEL
  • Minimal
Basic Qualifications
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location
  • Able to work safely in the above working conditions
  • Able to work the above shift/hours
  • Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs without assistance
  • Have a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment
  • Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow, lunar (clear light)
  • Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) in the work environment
  • Ability to use hands and use hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling
  • Ability to climb ladders and get on/off equipment
  • Ability to occasionally work from various heights including making repairs on top of railcars
  • Ability to bend, walk, stand and sit occasionally with breaks
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; wear the required personal protective equipment

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
  • New Hire: 60 calendar days
  • Apprentice: 122 working days
