During the Harvest season, we are looking to hire a Harvest Sugar Sampler for the Fresno, Madera and Merced (Central ‘Interior’ Valley) area. This is a great role for those looking to gain experience in the wine industry or seeking an interim role that takes one to gorgeous vineyards and outdoor vistas throughout the Central Valley.
In this remote role, you will be responsible for collecting field data including cluster counts, weights, pest and disease pressure and general phenological data as well as perform field sugar testing of grapes for approximately 12-14 weeks. The Harvest Sugar Sampler will have the opportunity to work with the grower relations team.
This seasonal position lasts through Harvest with an estimated duration of early August through approximately mid-October 2024.
Central Valley focused position This remote role will spend a majority of the time in Fresno, Madera, Merced and San Joaquin counties with occasional visits to growers in Stanislaus and Sacramento counties. Pre-Harvest, the role will average two to four (2-4) days a week continuing through most of Harvest. A fair amount of your time will involve driving to vineyard sites.
The ideal candidate will be located within the greater Central Valley region with slight preference to those in Fresno County. The Company provides standard mileage reimbursement for business-related miles while in the field.
Responsibilities
· Collect cluster counts and weights.
· Monitor and undertake sugar sampling (brix samples) of grapes in designated areas of the vineyards in a timely and accurate manner.
· Record and report results to grower relations team/supervisor on a daily basis.
· Record and track time and mileage for payroll.
· Assist with vineyard monitoring and related tasks such as monitoring pest and disease pressure, observing grape ripeness characteristics, monitor vineyard stress and record keeping of sugar sampling results.
Required
· Ability to communicate—both written and verbal—in a professional and effective manner with people in the organization as well as our grower community
· Must provide own vehicle that is capable of driving on dirt roads and uneven terrain
· Valid Driver’s License and auto insurance required
· Requires rigorous walking, and physical work in vineyards with steep and/or uneven terrain
· May require work in extreme weather such as heat for extended periods
· Willingness to travel within the counties
· Early morning hours and some Saturday work required
· Self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
· Detail oriented with excellent record keeping skills
· Some data entry and computer work required
· Must adapt easily to daily changes in schedules, plans and priorities
· Professional attitude and proper representation of the Company with growers and the public
· Teamwork with internal and external contacts
· Ability to read and follow a map
· During busy periods, effort will be made to provide employees with adequate advance notice should overtime become necessary. All overtime work must have the prior authorization of the employee’s supervisor before it is performed
Preferred
· Viticulture knowledge, a plus (but not required)
· A passion for or interest in agriculture
· Appreciation for an outdoor work environment
Compensation
· Pay Rate: $19 - $22 per hour
· Actual salaries will vary and are based on a candidate’s relevant education, qualifications, experience, skillset, competencies, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. as needed; ability to drive motor vehicles to assigned ranches, work locations and offices; able to work in all weather conditions including but not limited to heat, cold, wet and windy. Ability to walk and perform physical work in vineyards with steep and/or uneven terrain, mud, dust and soft soil. Ability to climb, crawl, squat, kneel, and bend. Sitting, hand/finger dexterity, and working at computer or in an office or shop setting required.
