Description

Job Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Pre-Surgical Testing Nurse to join our team. This role focuses on pre-surgical assessments while leveraging expertise in Pre-Op and PACU. The Pre-Surgical Testing Nurse will conduct thorough pre-operative assessments and prepare patients for surgery. This position requires cross-training in Pre-Op and PACU, ensuring comprehensive care throughout the surgical process. The primary emphasis is on pre-surgical testing, patient education, and coordination of care with surgical teams.

Department: Pre-Op/PACU

Reports to: Pre-Op/PACU Manager

Schedule/Type: FT - onsite/hourly 4 10's M-f

Wage: $38-53/hr, commensurate with experience

Requirements

Key Responsibilities 

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history reviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests, to evaluate surgical readiness.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Provide patient and family education on pre-operative instructions, including medications, diet, and preparation for surgery, ensuring informed consent.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including initiating IVs and ensuring all necessary pre-operative tests and evaluations are completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain accurate records of pre-surgical assessments and patient interactions in electronic health records (EHR) systems, and document findings for the surgical team.
  • Coordinate with the surgical team to ensure seamless patient care, and communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Assess patients' conditions post-surgery, monitor vital signs, and ensure they meet discharge criteria, documenting progress and interventions as needed.
  • Adhere to established protocols, standards, and regulatory requirements, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Required Skills

  • Advanced understanding of human anatomy and physiology to effectively assess and manage patient care.
  • Proficient in the use of specialized medical equipment and surgical instruments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals
  • Possesses knowledge and skill in collecting facility identified diagnostic waived tests, and the interpretation of lab results, ability to recognize abnormal values and take appropriate intervention, or additional follow up with attending physician or specialist. .
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on critical thinking and decision-making in patient care.
  • Methodically applies rational thought to practices which insure an environment of safety and security for the patient under the influence of medications. 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical written information or instructions and apply according to operate equipment safely
  • Competence in conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, and applying evidence-based practice standards.

Experience Requirement's

  • Minimum of 2 years in Pre-Op/PACU; 1 year in acute care or an orthopedic setting preferred. 
  • Experience in Pre-Surgical Testing

Educations/Certifications Requirements

  •  Associate degree in Nursing (A.A.) or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) preferred.
  •  Current Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current BCLS certification,
  • Current ACLS certification
