Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Learning Innovation provides high-level leadership for ensuring the University attracts and retains a highly qualified and diverse faculty, and innovation around delivery modes of instruction. This position will have the responsibility to advance the following key areas: Tenure and promotion, post-tenure, faculty development and instructional design, faculty contracts, academic curriculum and policy, and resource management for high-quality teaching and learning, in alignment with strategic directions and divisional goals. This position will serve on the Provost’s Academic Leadership team. Characteristic duties and responsibilities are interrelated with all other divisions on campus and require strong collaboration with Deans, Associate Deans, Associate Vice Presidents, Human Resources, and other stakeholders and constituencies with strong faculty consultation.
DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide strategic and visionary leadership in the areas of faculty affairs and related policy.
  • Lead Chair selection, professional development, and evaluation, in collaboration with faculty, other Associate Provosts, and the Provost.
  • Organize and provide continuity to faculty reviews, by:
  • Conducting post-tenure reviews with the chair and faculty member under review;
  • Working with deans/department chairs offices to ensure that promotion and tenure, and interim tenure reviews are shepherded through the system in a timely way;
  • Ensuring that faculty performance reviews are completed in a timely manner and follow the practices outlined in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Work with department chairs, other Associate Provosts, and the Provost to help recruit and retain a diverse faculty in our full time and part-time faculty ranks.
  • Work with department chairs and other Associate Provosts as needed on faculty workload assignments across all faculty teaching undergraduate courses and in collaboration with the dean of Graduate Studies on workload in graduate courses, to advise the Provost on faculty workload assignments.
  • Work with chairs, Associate Provosts, Faculty Senate Executive Committee and the Provost as needed to ensure consistency in application of the policies in the Faculty Handbook across all faculty.
  • Work with chairs and BSU’s Office of Human Resources as needed to help resolve personnel matters involving faculty.
  • Work as a member of the Provost’s Academic Deans Council, and with other Associate Provosts on issues related to the operations and strategic priorities of the Division of Academic Affairs and the University.
  • Supervise the quality of instruction provided by promoting instructional design strategies in all modalities of instruction
  • Provide high-level leadership for existing online instructional offerings, and coordinate the development and implementation of a comprehensive online strategy to promote the growth of BSU’s online education.
  • Undertake the management of key performance indicators of online programs and courses and the continuous improvement of online student academic experiences and success.
  • Ensure that Bowie State University maintains a career life balance for faculty.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Doctorate or terminal degree and a record of successful teaching, service, and scholarship/ creative activity is required.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible administrative experience working in academic leadership at an institution of higher education, including a minimum of three (3) years of administrative leadership in academic affairs.
  • The candidate should be or should have been a tenured faculty member who holds the rank of Professor, or equivalent status at another institution, and has held/is holding one or more significant faculty leadership positions that involve faculty review.
  • The candidate must be attentive to issues of confidentiality and possess strong interpersonal skills, including those related to conflict resolution. The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Learning Innovations will work collaboratively with the Division’s leadership and other University leaders to advance the initiatives of the division and the university, including a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Experience
  • Combination of higher education administration experience (with increasing levels of responsibility at the level of department chair or higher) and faculty experience (commensurate with tenure and promotion to the rank of associate professor or professor in any discipline), with a track record of successful experience and accomplishments in teaching excellence and innovation, research/scholarly/creative endeavors, and external funding.
  • Evidence of formal and informal leadership in the areas of curriculum (e.g., chairing university committees, organization of faculty projects, curriculum development, policy development/implementation, and student advising).
  • Ability to work in a collective bargaining/shared governance environment and to interact effectively with a variety of on- and off-campus constituents.
  • Experience with higher education curriculum development and implementation, understanding of general education, graduation requirements, and academic assessment, and program review.
  • Experience with higher education regional accreditation organizations, standards and articulation processes and program reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan and manage resources (e.g. financial, personnel, facility, technology, etc.), to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and advancing racial/social justice and equity in communities and engagements.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • The ideal candidate will possess a commitment to the mission and core values of Bowie State University; a record of progressively advanced administrative experience in higher education; demonstrated responsibility for a broad range of organizational areas; experience developing, implementing, and overseeing academic curricula, programs, and policies; experience with assessment of learning outcomes, online learning, general education, program review and accreditation; understanding of Middle State Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), University System of Maryland (USM), and Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) guidelines, processes, and requirements.
  • The successful candidate will also have superior leadership, organizational, planning, and management skills, along with outstanding written and oral communication skills; professional and ethical standards of the highest caliber; sound judgment, maturity, and composure; commitment to providing superior service by example and through administrative practices; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with diverse groups and to engage stakeholders in decision-making; and commitment to promoting success of all students and reducing barriers to success related to differences in dimensions such as race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, culture, and disability.
