Boys Town is Hiring an Animal Care Technician II Near Omaha, NE

Provides sanitation, custodial, and other support services for the daily operation and maintenance of the animal facility. Provides animal husbandry and care to facility operations support based on the current needs of the facility.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  • Provides food and water to animals, according to established schedules.
  • Maintains appropriate records and documentation, as directed.
  • Monitors environmental conditions on a daily basis, as directed, and reports deviations from normal conditions to other Vivarium staff, appropriate research technician and supervisor.
  • Monitors sanitation and sterilization quality control standards, as directed.
  • Cleans and disinfects cages.
  • Changes animal cages.
  • Monitors ordering and receiving shipments of feed, bedding, and other materials.
  • Consults with the supervisor and attending Veterinarian in administering care to animals.
  • Assists in developing and modifying animal care procedures which promote the effectiveness and efficiency of the operation.
  • Assists with animal acquisition, shipment, quarantine and relinquishment, as directed.
  • Assists other Animal Care Technicians, investigators, research technicians, and students to provide training and to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines, as directed.
  • Reports instances of possible noncompliance in animal care or use to the supervisor and/or Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Assists in coordinating emergency responses associated with potential disasters affecting animals within the Animal Care Facility.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Works cooperatively as part of a team and to communicate effectively with supervisors, investigators, technicians and attending veterinarian.
  • Follows established procedures and schedules, and to work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Handles animals.
  • Maintains accurate records.
  • Operates cage-washer, sterilizer and other equipment.
  • Works Holidays and weekends on rotating schedule, as well as some overtime.
  • Conducts all activities in compliance with all relevant Federal, State, local, and institutional regulations, policies and guidelines.
  • Works in a quiet environment.
  • Reads, comprehends, and follows written and verbal instructions and effectively communicate in English.
  • Good computer skills including the ability to utilize Microsoft software (i.e., Word and Excel).
  • Good organizational, communicative and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in handling and working with animals required.
  • Ability to work Holidays and weekends on rotating schedule required.
  • Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certification within 30 days of transfer or hire required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion and participation in continuing education programs from American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.
