Bradford County Correctional Facility is Hiring a Corrections Officer Near Troy, PA

JOB SUMMARY:

Maintains control of inmates of the County Jail; does related work as require.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

Work involves responsibility for preventing escapes and maintaining order among prisoners. Employees supervise and guard a group of inmates on work assignments. Duties are carried out in accordance with established orders and procedures. Supervision is received from a higher ranking officer who makes the assignments and reviews the work by personal observation and inspections.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

Enforces County rules and regulations in handling and guarding prisoners;

Supervises and guards prisoners performing work assignments;

Keeps count of prisoners under supervision;

Checks work in progress to insure conformance with instructions;

Guards prisoners to and from work assignments;

Shakes down prisoners at end of day’s work to remove and objectionable materials from their possession;

Escorts prisoners to and from activity and other locations;

Performs tasks relating to intakes and releases;

Shakes down prisoners and makes inspections for contraband;

Locks and unlocks doors and performs related security tasks;

Keeps records and makes reports.

Performs other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works indoors with limited work space, adequate lighting and ventilation, and fluctuation in temperatures; exposure to noise, disruptions, and stress;

Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt;

Works with potentially volatile, hostile or aggressive inmates.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have the ability to record, convey, and present information, explain procedures, and follow instructions;

Must be able to sit for long periods of time with frequent periods of standing, walking, and occasional twisting, reaching, pulling, and pushing required for obtaining files, doing inspections or other job duties;

Dexterity requirements range from simple to complex movements of fingers/hands, legs/feet, or torso to carry out job duties;

Sedentary work with occasional lifting, 15-20 pounds;

Must demonstrate emotional stability;

Ability to cope with physical and mental stress of the position;

Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to quickly learn the methods and techniques used in the control and custody of prisoners; ability to control and direct inmates individually and in groups; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to remain alert at all times and to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; some skill in the use and care of firearms; physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects, and ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE and TRAINING:

Some experience in supervision laborers or in police or general guard duty and completion of a standard high school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Possession of a driver’s license. Completion of training program required by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania/Department of Corrections.
