JOB DESCRIPTION

LITERACY SPECIALIST


GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Literacy Specialist will teach reading intervention support to students who are below standard. The specialist will collaborate among basic education, Special Education and English Language Learner (ELL) teachers along with support staff to provide a comprehensive system of evidence-based reading instruction to students.


Reports to and evaluated by: State & Federal Programs Asst. Director with input from building principal(s).


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate understanding in literacy development and proficiency in delivering skills-based, targeted reading interventions
  • Provide reading intervention services to K-8 students using district-approved, evidence-based reading intervention materials and strategies, consistent with current research on how young minds develop cognitive, language, writing, and reading skills
  • Assist with coordination of reading intervention services during and outside the school day for students not at standard. Work with the principal and staff to develop a systematic plan for reading interventions
  • Collaborate with district and school-level staff to develop a research-based intervention model within a multi-tiered system of support that uses individualized, diagnostic assessments to design appropriate developmental lessons for students; analyze student progress and data to determine the effectiveness of instruction
  • Demonstrate ability to administer, score and utilize assessments to design flexible groupings, target instruction and monitor progress
  • Design and implement instructional practices that differentiate curriculum opportunities for students to reach proficiency in grade level standards
  • Demonstrate classroom management procedures that provide a powerful teaching and learning environment conducive to both individuals and small groups
  • Participate in PLC meetings, grade level meetings and school wide meetings. Attend frequent and ongoing-targeted professional learning for reading intervention specialists. Share expertise with staff
  • Schedule intervention time that pairs expert professionals with students who have the greatest needs
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form
  • Display enthusiasm and an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning
  • Implements, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; makes referrals for assistance where appropriate


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement
  • Experience in reading instruction, specifically to a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population
  • Ability to attend and demonstrate proficiency in current evidence-based reading research and instructional practices
  • Possess flexibility and the ability to coordinate and manage a varied schedule
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Possess or be willing to acquire skills and knowledge in the following areas:

o Literacy and Language Development

o Effective instructional and intervention strategies

o Multi-tiered system of supports

o Elementary core and supplemental curriculum and materials

o State and District Assessment Measures
