Job Title: Accounting Manager

Overview: The Accounting Manager ensures the monthly close accounting cycle is completed accurately and timely. This role involves preparing and reviewing financial statements across multiple accounting systems, supervising the accounts payable and accounting team, and collaborating with the Property Management Controller to ensure precise recording of company transactions and the preparation of financial reporting packets for owners and leadership. The Accounting Manager also monitors and ensures compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise the accounts payable and accounting team for the multifamily and commercial managed portfolio.
• Manage the accuracy and productivity of daily activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash disbursements, invoicing/billing, customer credits and collections, payroll, fixed asset records, general and entity accounting.
• Oversee all aspects of the monthly and annual accounting close activities.
• Reconcile bank accounts and monitor to ensure stale reconciling items are cleared for the multifamily and commercial managed portfolio.
• Review and oversee management fee calculations and billing for real estate services fees, reimbursements, and billbacks.
• Monitor cash flows, distributions, and contribution requests.
• Ensure timely payments for critical expenses, utilities, debt servicing, insurance, and taxes.
• Monitor certificates of insurance for property and management company vendors.
• Prepare monthly financial statements for properties, conduct financial reviews, and send packages to ownership.
• Create ad-hoc financial reports with analytics to drive efficiencies and provide strong internal controls.
• Participate in the annual budgeting process and verify input into accounting systems.
• Collaborate with outside agencies, auditors, and owners/investors to provide necessary documentation upon request.
• Examine, document, and analyze existing policies and procedures, research alternative opportunities, and develop more effective and efficient processes. Act as a positive change agent.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year college/university or equivalent.
• 5 years of related experience in real estate, property management, or corporate accounting.
• Familiarity with GAAP and the application of accounting principles and journal entries.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or database/warehouse management.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to provide clear direction.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Ability to manage priorities and workflow while maintaining attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong interpersonal skills; good judgment in making timely decisions.
• Creative, flexible, and innovative team player.
• Location: Hybrid (3 days onsite in our downtown Chicago office).
