Role Summary:  Design engineers are engaged throughout Brinly's Toll Gate NPD & Redesign process, while growing our intellectual property with high-quality, innovative products for the consumer and commercial turf care & lawn and garden markets. 

Essential Job Duties: 

  1. Participate in the Company’s toll gate NPD process to create strong market leading designs and redesigns to maintain and extend our market position. 
  2. Participate in and coordinate design testing and evaluation to improve product designs, meet customer requirements, and improve domestic and import product manufacturing capabilities. 
  3. Responsible for project management within the toll gate NPD process to meet deadline objectives while achieving product cost targets.
  4. Create solid model components, assemblies, and drawings using PTC Creo.
  5. Work with R&D in the creation of prototypes from conceptual testing through final production design.
  6. Develop, coordinate, and document test plans for new products and design changes. 
  7. Work with Industrial Engineers and Manufacturing Support in the processing of Engineering Change Requests (ECR). 
  8. Collaborate with the Purchasing Department in production material cost take out (MCTO) projects.
  9. Interact with Product Champions, Product Councils, End User Focus Groups, Partners and Customers to gain product feedback information for integration into product designs. 
  10. Participate in tradeshows. 
  11. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the products and industry trends. 
  12. Core physical requirements: Sitting (frequent), Walking (frequent), Standing (frequent), Climbing Stairs (moderate), Reaching/Pulling/Bending (frequent), Typing/Machine/Hand Tools using hands/fingers/wrist (frequent). Core environmental requirements: Office (primary-70%) Climate Controlled; Manufacturing/R&D Lab/Outside Testing Area (secondary-30%) Partially Climate Controlled. 
  13. Travel: Up to 5% (domestic/international)

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree (BSME) or equivalent in mechanical engineering. Master's in mechanical engineering preferred.

Work Experience: 

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience designing for consumer or commercial markets 
  • Turf care or lawn & garden experience or business experience preferred 
  • Project Management within Design Engineering required
  • Experience in metal part design with working knowledge of sheet metal processes including shearing, cutting, stamping, bending, welding, and powder coating desired
  • Experience in plastic part design with a working knowledge of plastic materials and plastic processes including injection, vacuum, blow, compression, and rotational molding desired 
  • Design experience with the following engineering systems: hydraulic, DC electrical, and engine driven machinery and controls desired 
  • Experience using PTC Creo 3D modeling software or equivalent 
  • Software application skills: Microsoft Office (must be Advanced Excel user) and ERP systems (Infor preferred)
  • Experience designing for domestic and foreign manufacturing

  • Ability to project manage multiple design projects throughout toll gate NPD process simultaneously

    • Highly organized and detailed oriented 
    • Possess a high degree of professionalism and executes duties in an ethical manner
    • Strong communications skills: writing, verbal (presentation), technology
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger engineering and R&D team
