ROLE: INSTRUCTIONAL COACH

REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/PRINCIPAL

SERVING GRADES: K-8

Mission: Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter School, The Shirley Rodriguez-Remeneski School (“BGLIG,” pronounced Big League) will provide an exceptional education to young girls through dual language instruction in a technology-rich environment, while building on cultural heritage to foster leadership characteristics and strong values, promote self-confidence and create global leaders. Through highly motivated and accomplished teachers, our students will receive a standards-based, research-proven, technology-infused curriculum focusing on core subjects that will create a strong foundation for life-long learning.

Our intellectually challenging curriculum, enriched by a cultural perspective, a focus on successful women leaders, and a dual language program, will promote excellence in all areas: cognitive, social, emotional, and moral. A single-sex environment coupled with a rigorous instructional program ensures that each student is able to disengage from traditional social pressures and focus on personal development and academic achievement.

Position Overview

At Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter School Instructional Coaches understand and promote the school’s mission, vision, objectives, and policies both within and outside the immediate school community. This teacher-leader’s primary responsibility is to coach and support teachers by providing direct feedback and lesson modeling in the interest of improving their practice, supporting our dual language program and achieving greater student learning outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

(BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Use the Danielson Framework to observe lessons and provide specific and actionable feedback for improvement.

  • Vet lesson plans and provide curricular guidance as needed.

  • Model lessons and demonstrate effective classroom practices for teachers.

  • Assist teachers with lesson preparation.

  • Coordinate and analyze student assessment data with teachers, including formative assessments and supports teachers in the use of these data to guide instruction and interventions.

  • Work with the Special Education Coordinator, Academic Intervention Specialists and classroom teachers to determine the most appropriate intervention for struggling students.

  • Create and deliver professional development to teachers and staff during the summer session and as needed basis throughout the course of the year.

  • Create individualized improvement plans for struggling teachers and monitor progress towards clear goals.

  • Collaborate with teachers to find solutions to challenges faced in the classroom, using data to drive decision-making.

  • Provide recommendations for school-wide professional development based on the instructional needs of teachers and the academic needs of students and guided by the school’s instructional priorities.

  • Be present in classrooms often and actively coach teachers, providing them with timely constructive feedback.

  • Support teachers to design coherent, NYLS-aligned lessons and units that facilitate deep conceptual understanding of content and support our dual language program.

  • Analyze student work with teachers for the purposes of assessing learning, modifying instruction and re-teaching content.

  • Guide teachers to modify, differentiate and extend learning experiences to engage all students.

  • Facilitate weekly department meetings designed to support student development, our dual language program and curricular alignment with New York State Learning Standards, state and national exams.

  • Support teachers in developing curriculum, syllabi, and exams.

  • Interact with students, parents and colleagues in a professional, positive and inspiring manner.

  • Other tasks as assigned by school leaders.

Student and Extracurricular Activities

  • Provide opportunities and supervise activities in order for students to demonstrate individually and with large groups the skills and talents developed in the classroom.

Student Support & School Culture

  • Maintain open communication with parents by scheduling parent/teacher conferences.

  • Coordinate Curriculum Night for Parents to experience general instruction at BGLIG.

  • Support BGLIG’s Dual Language program by creating and supporting dual language activities and projects.

General Duties

  • Responsible for the safety and welfare of all students during admission, dismissal, lunch and physical education.

  • Other tasks as assigned by school leaders.

Qualifications

  • Alignment to BGLIG’s core values and mission.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters Degree in the field of education preferred.

  • NYS teaching certification required.

  • Four or more years of teaching experience in elementary or middle grades with a proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom.

  • Experience in a high performing charter or district school preferred but not required.

  • Strong classroom management skills.

  • Strong knowledge of Common Core.

  • Strong knowledge of the Danielson Framework for Teaching.

  • Experience with the guided release approach to lesson planning.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff.

  • Intermediate to advanced Spanish language skills preferred.

  • Experience in a dual language setting preferred.

  • Proficient in use of technology, including various G Suite teaching tools.
