REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Engineering Inspector in the WWS Engineering Division.

This is advanced technical work in the inspection of underground public works utility construction projects for the Water and Wastewater Services Division. The position requires extensive knowledge and experience in the installation of underground utilities in public rights-of-way and easements. Other duties include inspection of road construction, water and sewer treatment plants, lift station construction and rehabilitation, as well as investigation of customer complaints related to construction activities. The incumbent conducts engineering tests, prepares test reports and other written reports on projects inspected. The position requires flexible after- hours and periodic night work to minimize impact of work to the public. Applicants must have the ability to occasionally perform manual tasks involving strenuous physical and outdoor work activities.
General Description
Performs journey level construction inspection tasks at a variety of public works construction sites.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires two (2) years experience in engineering field survey and/or inspection work depending on area of assignment or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Valid Florida Class "E" Driver's License for duration of hire.
Preferences
* Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering, Contract Management, or closely related field.
* Current Florida Registration as a Professional Engineer.
* General Engineered Construction Builder.
* 1A-A License (Underground Utility & Excavation); or 1A-B License (Secondary Utility Excavation).
* Master Plumber License.
* Broward County Licensed General Building Contractor; or Specialty Building Contractor; or Engineer/Specialty Engineering Contractor.
* At least two (2) years of experience in utility construction and/or utility inspection.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Inspects all road construction in the public right-of-way within assigned district; checks grade plan for proposed construction; checks sub-base for bearing and soil types, sub-grade for density, rock base for quality, quantity and finish; checks surface for prime coat and asphaltic concrete; confers with builders and insures that county standards are being adhered to; makes written reports to superior as to progress on a percentage of completion basis.

Inspects and observes the performance of work relating to various utility projects including water/sewer treatment plant, lift stations, pump stations, force mains, sewer mains, water mains and appurtenances.

Coordinates utility shutdowns, tie-ins and documents daily work progress; maintains records of equipment, maintenance and quantities installed for payment in accordance with various contractual specifications.

Assists contractors and engineers in interpreting county plans and specifications on contract work; reviews plans and blueprints; checks layout and grades of structures; checks materials and makes standard field and laboratory tests; prepares weekly progress reports.

Inspects work pertaining to subdivisions for compliance with approved plans and specifications, and minimum requirements of subdivision regulations.

Inspects private utility installations to determine compliance with approved permits and accompanying plans; including telephone, electricity, water, gas lines, and sanitary sewerage and storm sewer piping.

Inspects bridge construction, checks approaches and right-of-way for adherence to construction plans.

Investigates complaints relating to the public right-of-way.

Performs related work as assigned.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
