The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Intern - Planning Section- Historic Preservation to support the Urban Planning Division.
*Temporary appointment for up to six months.
Internship opportunity for those interested in the Historic Preservation profession or History, Anthropology/Archaeology. Intern will become familiar with the full range of work of the agency and participate in agency meetings related to Preservation and meetings of the Historic Preservation Board.
General Description
Performs support duties in an agency in order to gain knowledge, skills and professional experience.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures. Work is reviewed through observation of performance, frequent conferences and reports.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Currently enrolled in, or graduated from, a degree-seeking program from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in a field relevant to area of assignment.
OR

Able to meet the qualifications of a County Commission and Human Resources approved internship or apprenticeship program (Hiring Agency must contact Staffing Services prior to conducting recruitment).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

The intern assists the Historic Preservation Officer (HPO) completing the responsibilities of the County's Certified Local Government Historic Preservation Program including:
1. Providing historic preservation/archaeological services and support information to twenty five (25) municipalities and the BMSD.
2. Assists the HPO in preparing public hearings, regular meetings and workshops of the Historic Preservation Board.
3. Conducts field visits for Certificates to Dig applications related to ground disturbance activities within archaeological sites and zones.
4. Conducts field visits for Certificates of Appropriateness applications related historic sites.
5. Assists the HPO in preparing Historic and Archaeological Preservation designation reports and submittals for public hearings before the Historic Preservation Board and Board of County Commissioners.
6. Assists the HPO in preparing recommendations for Historic Preservation Ad Valorem Tax Exemptions.
7. Conducts historical research and recordings for Broward County on individual sites, districts and survey areas.
8. Participates in historic site surveys for specific focus areas as needed.
9. Conducts field visits for Historic Preservation reviews of Plats and Plat Amendments, general development projects, and County's Comprehensive Plan amendments for compliance with historic and archaeological preservation.
10. Intern will work and complete a preservation project contributing to the goals of Historic Preservation Program and Board.
11. Specific assignments will be designed by the HPO

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
