Title: Teacher on Special Assignment - Dean of Students

Reports to: Principal

Purpose:

The purpose of the Teacher on Special Assignment - Dean of Students is to provide leadership and support in fostering a positive and safe school culture, conducive to student success, promoting student well-being, and ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment. The Dean of Students will collaborate with school administration, staff, and parents to implement strategies for student behavior management, conflict resolution, and character development. By implementing proactive disciplinary strategies, promoting positive behavior interventions, and providing support to students in need, the Dean of Students contributes to creating a culture of respect, responsibility, and accountability within the school community. This position collaborates closely with administrators, teachers, parents, and external stakeholders to address disciplinary issues effectively and to implement preventive measures that promote a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in related field or Master’s Degree (preferred)
  2. Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  3. Valid Arizona Department of Education Teaching Certificate (required) or Administrator Certificate (preferred)
  4. A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience
  5. School-based leadership experience (preferred)
  6. Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred)
  7. Demonstrated leadership experience in data-driven decision-making
  8. Demonstrated evidence of effective presentation skills
  9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  10. Previous experience in student discipline, behavior management, or counseling (preferred)
  11. Demonstrated evidence of working effectively with various groups, such as students, staff and community members
  12. Demonstrated evidence of ability to effectively use technology to perform duties
  13. Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations pertaining to student rights and responsibilities
  14. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Duties and Responsibilities

Regular Position:

  1. Supports the vision and mission of the school site and the district.
  2. Assists the site leadership team in the general administration of the school and assumes administrator responsibility as assigned.
  3. Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
  4. Supports the site leadership in the oversight of all components of student attendance.
  5. Oversees all components of student discipline on campus including but not limited to the PBIS and Well Managed Schools programs on campus. 
  6. Serve as a resource person to staff regarding policy, procedure, and special situations.
  7. Conduct conferences with parents and all involved personnel regarding attendance or disciplinary problems.
  8. Suggest alternative means and new ideas, different approaches to aid in achieving students’ success and improved educational goals.
  9. Conduct conferences with parents and other personnel regarding attendance or disciplinary problems.
  10. Ensure necessary disciplinary records are maintained for grade-level students.
  11. Monitor attendance of grade-level students having difficulty achieving their educational goals.
  12. Attend all grade-level pupil personnel and multidisciplinary staffing for student placement in appropriate programs to meet the individual needs of the students.
  13. Coordinates with the school counselor and social worker regarding student progress toward fulfilling promotion requirements.
  14. Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body, and deal with special cases as necessary.
  15. Administer school rules regarding attendance, discipline, and code of conduct.
  16. Assist in the evaluation of classified and certified staff as assigned.
  17. Establish goals and objectives based on analysis of student achievement data.
  18. Help with curriculum alignment, instructional strategies and implementation.
  19. Analyzes assessments to assist school leaders in data-driven decision-making
  20. Investigate, adjudicate, and monitor minor infractions of the school code in the form of progressive discipline such as detentions, classroom referrals, and in-school suspension
  21. Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct
  22. Assists with supervision of student club activities and crowd control at school events
  23. Represent the district in a professional manner always acting in the best interest of the district and its constituents. 
  24. Perform other duties as assigned 

Supplemental Position:

  1. Work ten (10) days beyond the teacher work calendar as scheduled by the school/district leadership team. 
  2. Supports and plans the instructional development of all teachers in understanding the BESD policy, disciplinary matrix, student code of conduct, and state law as it relates to student discipline. 
  3. Meet with administrators, staff, parents and community members to establish and implement disciplinary and incentive programs that support the vision and mission of the school and the district.
  4. Meet with site staff and parents outside of normal business hours to address any disciplinary concerns that may occur.
  5. Demonstrate skillful modeling of disciplinary practices for the classroom setting and other student learning environments.
  6. Plan and implement job-embedded professional techniques to address disciplinary concerns with minimal disruption to the learning environment. 
  7. Collaborate effectively with all stakeholders including the district CIA team, school leadership team, teaching staff, classified staff, site-based teams, and community groups.
  8. Attend meetings, district activities, and training, which may occur outside of contracted duty time. 
  9. Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to fifty (50) pounds, such as boxes, supplies, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and to interact with the public and other staff.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to moderately high during the work day. There may be periods of recurring stress in the performance of this job.

The schedule for the position will mostly be Monday through Friday during regular business hours. However, on occasion, based on specific events and/or district initiatives, the incumbent may be required to work during the evening time and weekends.

FLSA Status Exempt

189 Work Calendar plus 10 supplemental workdays

Certified Teacher Contract - Teacher Placement Schedule plus $10,000 addendum pay

Eligible for Classroom Site Fund Compensation

Benefits commensurate with Certified Benefits Package
