Position Overview:

BSP seeks a passionate, versatile, and enthusiastic educator and trainer with experience developing organizing and/or political curriculum for diverse groups with various backgrounds and education levels in the model of popular education. comprehensive organizing training and political education curriculum that grows the knowledge and confidence of existing member leaders, while simultaneously engaging the broader community. The Coordinator will identify and develop new leaders by creating a comprehensive, year-round leadership development and training curriculum, recruit participants and track their long term development as agents of change.

The Worker Voice Coordinator will be responsible for driving worker empowerment and civic engagement initiatives, designing and facilitating leadership development programs, and gathering program feedback from participants within the property services industry. The Worker Voice Coordinator will play a crucial role in promoting the well-being of property service workers, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are addressed in BSP’s systems change strategies. Worker voice is a critical part of equitable and inclusive worker success strategies with four distinct components as documented by National Fund for Workforce Solutions: representation, empowerment, agency and value. The Worker Voice Coordinator will work closely with workers, allies and partners to advocate for comprehensive worker-led solutions to achieving prosperity, belonging and wellbeing for California’s property service workers and their families. Central to this framework is BSP’s innovative high-road partnership between labor and management that is worker-centered, industry-led and aligned with key policy goals of equity, job quality, and sustainability. This role is a grant funded position.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead community organizing efforts to empower property service workers, including janitors, security guards, and airport service workers, fostering a sense of unity, solidarity, and advocacy.
  • Employ a popular education approach to worker engagement, building trust and creating educational opportunities that empower workers to reflect on their experiences and voice their concerns in order to affect change.
  • Engage and collaborate with various community stakeholders, including workers, grassroots organizations, unions, industry representatives and advocacy groups, to promote policy changes that improve the quality of life of property service workers and their families.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance civic engagement among property service workers, including naturalization campaigns, voter education, voter registration drives, and participation in decision-making processes related to their industry.
  • Facilitate leadership development programs and workshops specifically tailored to property service workers, employing popular education methods to ensure active participation and empowerment. Prepare leaders for advocacy meetings, public speaking, and media interviews.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with worker leaders through frequent in-person and virtual meetings.
  • Organize and facilitate regular feedback sessions with program participants from the property services industry to gather valuable insights, assess program effectiveness, and identify areas for improvement specific to their industry.
  • Collaborate with program staff to integrate participant feedback into program design, ensuring that services and initiatives are responsive to the needs and aspirations of property service workers in janitorial, security, and airport service roles.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with funders, partners, and other stakeholders to promote the organization's mission and expand resources for worker empowerment programs in this sector.
  • Collaborate closely with SEIU-USWW union staff and industry partners. Build new relationships with aligned nonprofit and labor organizations for collaboration and mutual learning.
  • Stay informed about relevant laws, policies, and regulations impacting property service workers, specifically in the janitorial, security, and airport service sectors, and provide updates and guidance to program participants.
  • Regular travel will be required to BSP’s seven office locations throughout the state.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as social work, community organizing, or public administration preferred) or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 4 years experience in membership-based organizing, including community and/or labor organizing, preferably with a demonstrated experience creating and running training curricula using popular education models.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (verbal and written) is required
  • Access to a personal vehicle.
  • Proven experience in building trust and employing popular education approaches to worker engagement, empowering workers to understand their rights and advocate for themselves.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and motivate diverse groups of individuals. Experience using multi-media platforms to create and deliver content.
  • Knowledge of civic engagement strategies and experience in promoting community participation in decision-making processes related to the property services industry.
  • Ability to collect and analyze program feedback, identify trends and patterns, and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including grassroots organizations, unions, industry representatives and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice. Deep understanding of the impact that these interlocking structural systems have on the lives of workers of color in low-wage industries.

Pay: $72,153.16 - $72,874.69 per year
