Bureau Land Management is Hiring a Data Analyst (Natural Resource Monitoring). Near Cheyenne, WY

Duties
  • Support monitoring implementation and data analysis in hydrological and aquatic monitoring programs within the framework of BLM’s multiple use mission.
  • Analyzes hydrological and aquatic monitoring and assessment data at multiple scales taking into account the underlying sampling design and associated statistical assumptions.
  • Reports on natural resource and/or ecological monitoring findings and recommendations. Prepares authoritative final reports and recommendations for management decisions.
  • Provides Quality Assurance/Quality Control of monitoring data. Manages natural resource and ecological monitoring data (e.g., geodatabases) and associated files.
  • May oversee and/or direct monitoring field crews to meet planned work accomplishments or data collection needs in support of Land Health Evaluations, Resource Management Plan effectiveness, and/or other permitted uses on BLM managed lands.

For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement you must possess either: one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
  • In-depth knowledge of ecology and natural resource sciences and practices as well as a strong understanding of the quantitative application of natural resource and ecological data sufficient toanalyze datasets and provide reports, summaries, etc. for reporting, NEPA, or other management decisions.
-OR-2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study
  • OR-Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work is also performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing, or driving motor vehicles to worksites. Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, and/or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.
Work Environment: The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time is also spent visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and/or involve safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the incumbent complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.
Education
This position has an individual occupational requirement. In order to qualify, you must meet one of the below:
  • Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

  • Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
