5) / Career Counselor (0.5). The Education Specialist will join a team of specialists that strive to enhance the affective / cognitive / social learning required by future physicians.

The Education Specialist will provide instruction that will occur in student appointments, seminars, and workshops. Responsibilities and duties include assessing, evaluating, and instituting strategies to improve student support services across the medical curriculum, managing didactic and practical tutoring, and monitoring the academic progress of medical students in collaboration with other Education Specialists and the Dean and Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs.

The Education Specialist will work to support the office and maintain relationships and advise students within the policies and practices of the college.

The Education Specialist will be a part of an interdisciplinary team whose goal is to ensure the academic and professional success of students that matriculate into BCOM.

The Mission of the Career Advising Program at Burrell College is to provide resources, programs, and advisement to better prepare our students for their medical education and successful career path.

The Career Advising Program is under the Office of Student Affairs and works collaboratively with all other College departments.

This position is exempt. This position reports to the Director of Student Academic Support and the Director of Career Development.

The pay for this position is $70,000. This position starts July 1, 2024. Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Manage the academic intervention and advising for a caseload of professional students, including tracking academic progress;

initiating student contact; interpreting assessment instruments; and advising students on how to enhance learning and performance.

Identify learning needs related to attention management, different abilities, and communicating effectively to support and guide students to appropriate resources.

Assist in the development and planning of Student Academic Support Services programs and resources to continue to enhance a proactive approach to the academic success of our student population.

Perform data entry and management of student data to support the identification and advising of at-risk students. Develop, implement, and maintain electronic and online Student Academic Support Services needed to enhance student success.

Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and adjust to changes in deadlines and schedules. Manage the BCOM Tutoring Program to increase student success in both the blocks and practical portions of coursework.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and other administrative staff. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to provide high-quality customer service in all relationships with colleagues inside and outside of his / her department, students, guests, and leaders;

view all interactions as a potential customer service opportunity. Provide individualized career advising for medical students from matriculation until graduation.

Travel to regional hubs may be required. Responsible for developing a series of career development and presentations that are timely, informative, and relevant for the changing times in medical school residency application.

Assist medical students with the preparation of their residency application, which includes but is not limited to CV development, writing noteworthy characteristics and personal statements, providing oversight on deadlines and completion of the ERAS application, in addition to providing the opportunity for mock interviews.

Responsible for planning on-campus programmings, such as career / residency fairs, specialty round tables, Seminars, networking events, residency / job boards, and other programs and events related to career development.

Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and / or present academic planning and career development modules and special workshops (e.

g. resume development, identifying internship / research opportunities, panel discussions, and other resources for career advising).

Understand and provide accurate information regarding academic policies and procedures as well as curriculum requirements to assist in short-term and long-term academic planning and career goals.

Participate and advise on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) Letter. Responsible for collecting and statistically evaluating metrics that demonstrate success in the match process of applicants with residency positions.

Make recommendations for improvements based on metrics and data. Serve as liaison and resource with academic and / or other student services departments as assigned.

Keep accurate records of student contacts and maintain confidentiality. Assist with administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Serve on committees and meetings as assigned. Other duties as assigned. Other skills important to this position : Knowledge of and understanding of student academic support services.

Professional accomplishments which meet the responsibilities outlined. Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently plan, organize, and operationalize strategic activities and career enhancement events.

Superior strategic coordination skills and a holistic understanding of the professional student career preparation path to successfully match in a National Residency Match Program, a certified medical residency program within the United States.

Ability to inspire students, faculty (fully affiliated and volunteer), and alumni to actively participate in the advising and mentoring of students interested in specific medical specialty career opportunities.

Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Demonstrated managerial and leadership skills. A strong work ethic with the ability to understand and translate contemporary academic medical pedagogy into concise information that is easily understood by diverse audiences.

An ability to be comfortable with the complex ambiguity of system and team building needed to build coalitions of mentors, advisors, and dedicated volunteer educators of our medical students.

Has the ability to work effectively with all types of constituents including students, physicians, faculty, administrators, alumni, and volunteers.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with both large and small groups. Minimum Qualifications and Experience : Master's Degree in higher education, science education, educational psychology, social work, education, student affairs, special education, basic sciences, or related field.

Experience : At least three (3) years of experience in higher education with increasing responsibility is required. Experience working with a diverse student population.

Experience with theory and practice in learning and instruction. Experience providing professional development for faculty and / or students.

Must have a valid driver’s license. Note : Applicants must currently be authorized to lawfully work in the United States on a full-time basis.
