Job Description

CABVI is seeking an Assistive Technology Manager to manage and provide assistive technology services children and adults who are blind and visually impaired, as well as those at risk for vision loss. Supervise the Assistive Technology Instructors. Manage CCTV sales and the loaner program. Coordinate with specialty rehabilitation areas to ensure full engagement in other needed rehab services including low vision, ASR, OT, case management, TVI, O&M, VRT, employment and social work.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage all assistive technology workload demands to ensure all requests for service are addressed in a timely manner with the highest quality of service. This would include consumer referrals, intakes, evaluations, case record, contracts request for assistance from agency staff and or agency departments, in-service presentations, camps, low vision days, and more. Ensure regular and ongoing engagement at all assistive technology centers and their local communities.
  • Teach assistive technology including screen readers, screen magnifiers, video magnifiers, Braille devices, accessible mobile apps, electronic notetakers, speech synthesizers and more.
  • Engage as needed with VRT and Occupational Therapy staff to develop innovative solutions for users with unique challenges in learning and utilizing technology. Consult, teach and provide support to family members, school personnel, employers, associated professionals, and significant others.
  • Remain current in all aspects of assistive technology through continuing education, seek out innovative technology solutions. Work with the Director of Clinical Rehabilitation Services and rehabilitation department to expand programs and services to individuals who are blind and visually impaired. Maintain and refresh as needed the inventory at all CABVI assistive technology locations.
  • Showcase and demonstrate assistive technology at professional, recreational and outreach activities organized by other CABVI departments and/or during VHWC tours and open house events. Serve as the assistive technology ambassador providing enriching and comprehensive tours of both assistive technology centers. Work closely with the Rehabilitation Sales Manager to bring groups into the centers for education. Work with the PR department to promote assistive technology services.
  • Supervise the assistive technology team; training, monitoring, and managing all services provided. Provide direction, guidance, and support to ensure comprehensiveness of service, high quality, cost effectiveness and professional engagement with all customers. Review case notes and training reports.
  • For cases referred by NYSCB, ensure CABVI meets NYSCB compliance updating policies, procedures and manuals as needed. Manage and prepare for program reviews and audits conducted by funding source. Monitor and maintain technology services in accordance with NYSCB Adaptive Technology contractual obligations/outcomes. Serves as the agency technology liaison with NYSCB, attending all required conferences and trainings needed.
  • Manage our CCTV sales and equipment loaner program. Work with all vendors of CCTVs and other related technology products to secure demos and promotional materials. Manage the private sale of CCTVs and other related technology equipment. Work with Rehabilitation Department Assistants to ensure some of the products are available in the Sight Shoppe. Work with the Director of Rehabilitation Clinical Services to coordinate fairs and other tech related trade shows with in the VHWC.
  • Develop and lead a variety of learning and instructional platforms including but not limited to one-on-one instruction, group and classroom instruction, remote learning, instructional videos and more.
  • Develop and conduct residential and virtual assistive technology programs partnering with existing rehab programs whenever possible such as CABVI’s Prevocational Program.
  • Develop school contracts as it relates to assistive technology to meet the needs of children in academic settings.

Requirements Include:

  • Associate degree in computer science, business, or related field with a minimum of two years’ experience in a managerial or supervisory role required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Must be skilled in both Apple and Window applications, Microsoft Office, and Teams. Certificate in assistive technology or willingness to enroll and complete an assistive technology certificate program required.
  • Previous working experience as a teacher or trainer required.
  • Must be proficient with computer and typing skills. Must have expertise with microcomputers and their operating systems. Must be knowledgeable regarding conventional hardware/software and installation on both PC and Macintosh systems. Familiarity with assistive technologies preferred. Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel. Must have knowledge in Google applications such as Docs and Sheets, mobile device applications including iOS and Android. Must be willing to learn new technology.
  • Travel required. Instruction may occur in a variety of environments including homes, school, employers, CABVI, and the community. Noise level is moderate.
  • Must be available for evening or weekend agency related functions.
  • Must have ability to effectively present information, and respond to questions from children, parents, professionals, and the general public. Must have ability to develop the consumer’s confidence and self-esteem. Requires excellent listening skills.
  • Must meet the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, Department of Special Education and the Department of Health personnel standards. Experienced with visually impaired population a plus.
