SUMMARY
Assists the District School Psychologist with threat assessments, including Light speed notifications. Provide individual and group counseling to students when needed based on threat data. Coordinate and collect data on sessions conducted at school sites. Collaborate with district staff to implement project-specific counseling strategies and other prevention programs related to mental health, wellness, and safe schools. Work as part of a team in developing and coordinating approaches to counseling designed to prevent school violence and other disciplinary concerns for school based staff, parents, and students. The counselor will be a liaison between and among parents, teachers, and wrap-around services as they relate to threat assessments
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assists the District School Psychologist with threat assessments, including Light speed notifications.
  • Coordinates individual and/or group counseling services to students and parents when needed based on threat data.
  • Consults with school staff when needed. Works with school personnel to provide staff trainings regarding school violence prevention, mental health awareness, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and school safety.
  • Provides threat assessments, crisis management, and mental health assessments when needed.
  • Assists in MTSS/PBIS trainings, TFI evaluations, and surveys as required by state and federal entities.
  • Facilitates communication between the home and school seeking to involve families in the educational process of their children and provides feedback to the school on family situations and problems that may impact their school performance.
  • Assists in implementing the strategic plan as per the department and district goals.
  • Serves as liaison between and among schools, families, and community agencies, collaborates on cases, and assists families in obtaining local services as deemed by threat assessments.
  • Conducts follow-up consultation(s) with school personnel, families, and students to ensure implementation of recommended mental health interventions after threat assessments have been conducted.
  • Provides technical assistance/coaching regarding mental health awareness, drug prevention, bullying prevention, suicide prevention, school violence prevention, and crisis intervention techniques to parents and school personnel as related to the district plan.
  • Maintains accurate records and data collection on all assigned students and groups regarding their referral, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Assists in the compilation of reports required by federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Participates in project staff meetings and in project planning, monitoring, evaluation, and staff development activities.
  • Performs any project-related tasks as assigned by the District School Psychologist.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • An individual who has a) documented competence in counseling children and adolescents in a school setting; b) licensed by the State Department (Ancillary Certification) and an independent professional regulatory authority; and c) is a Licensed Professional Counselor in good standing and authorized to practice in the State of Louisiana.
  • Knowledge of and experience with counseling methodologies appropriate for working with elementary, middle, and high school students. At least 4 years of school counseling experience.
  • Familiarity with the community, populations, and schools to be served.
  • Knowledge of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)/PBIS Framework.
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor, TBRI Trainer, ACE Educator, Crisis Prevention and Drug Prevention background preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from students, parents, employees, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of education.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
