Custodial Substitute Employment Opportunities
LOCATION
Ormondale School (TK-3)
Madera School (4-8)
WORK SCHEDULE: As needed during the school year (late August through mid June)
HOURLY RATE: $27.49 - $30.32 per hour, depending on assignment
The Portola Valley School District is seeking capable, qualified individuals to substitute on an as-needed basis for two school site custodians.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform a variety of routine and preventative maintenance work on the buildings and grounds
  • Scrub and mops floors, wash windows, counters, and walls. Vacuum rugs and carpets.
  • Assist in the lifting, moving, and storing of related items.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to buildings and fixtures. Report repair and maintenance needs.
  • Clean classrooms, offices, MUR, etc. on a regular basis. Empty and cleans waste receptacles.
  • Clean and disinfects restrooms, toilets, sinks, floors and restocks supplies on a regular basis.
  • Pick up paper. Pick up trash containers and empty into dumpsters.
  • Clean white boards as needed.
  • Disinfect sinks and counter tops. Cleans drinking fountains.
  • Assist with ill or injured students/staff, make emergency cleanups in cafeteria and other areas as needed.
  • Power wash sidewalks, eating areas, walls, and waste receptacles as needed.
  • Move furniture and equipment.
  • Setup meeting rooms, classrooms, and other school facilities for special meetings and events.
  • Comply with all safety, asbestos, and lead paint reporting requirements.
  • Turn lights on and off. Unlock/lock doors and gates to help maintain secure campus.
  • Checks doors, windows, and assigned area for vandalism. Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.
  • Communicate regularly with the head custodian for any schedule/task changes.
Ability to
  • Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate a variety of electrical equipment to clean floors, replace lights, and steam clean walls, pick up and deliver school supplies, furniture, and/or equipment.
  • Operate equipment, tools, and machines in a safe and proper manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and parents.
  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Deal with emotional, or angry persons in an effective manner.
  • Maintain regular, predictable attendance.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Plan and organize, and efficiently utilize time management and organizational skills.
  • Troubleshoot and repair/replace a variety of furniture and school equipment
Qualifications
  • One (1) year of building custodial experience, preferably in a school setting.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize duties based on the situation at hand.
  • Knowledge of basic of cleaning techniques, facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to read basic operating instructions and write reports.
  • Reasonable degree of computer proficiency to use online work order request system, email, etc.
Knowledge of
  • Safety practices, and best practices/experience working with school age children.
  • District policies and procedures as they apply to duties as a school custodian.
  • Methods and practices of cleaning and repair of District equipment and furniture.
  • Operation of tools and equipment used in all phases of school cleaning.
Must pass DOJ background check, and complete paperwork prior to start of work.
ADA COMPLIANCE
  • Perform heavy physical exertion.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, run and crawl.
  • Lift 75-100 lbs., carry 50 lbs.
  • Reach in all directions (physically).
  • Significant sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Environmental Factors: Daily assignments will take place both indoors and outdoors. Tasks are regularly performed may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, machinery vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
