Job Description and Duties

Are you excited to be part of a dynamic and diverse team working to manage and restore habitat for wildlife in Northern California? The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a motivated individual to work as the San Mateo-San Francisco-Marin Unit and Human Wildlife Conflict Biologist assisting our team region-wide in the Bay Delta Region. The job will include regularly conducting monitoring of wildlife and habitats and conducting habitat management on Un-Staffed CDFW Lands.

Duties include: Working as a field biologist to perform challenging activities that benefit Wildlife and CDFW Lands, and conducting seasonal wildlife surveys including game, nongame, and threatened and endangered species. The position will assist with wildfire resiliency and fuel reduction projects, and facility operations and maintenance projects, and interacting with the public. The incumbent will also work with and lead Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aids.

This position will respond to public information inquires for assistance in human/wildlife conflicts, hunting opportunities, and other wildlife related matters. The job includes conducting field site visits as needed throughout Bay Delta Region, issuing depredation permits to address property damage as appropriate. The incumbent will also present information to the public, civic groups, boards, and commissions, supporting stakeholder outreach, education and engagement and local constituent groups as needed.

This position will occasionally be assisting with or conducting wildlife captures, monitoring wildlife and related activities. Law Enforcement assistance with public safety wildlife response is also expected.

Working Conditions

Work hours and days vary with irregular schedules to accommodate field work. Long hours with early or late stop/start times may be regularly required. Frequently use a laptop/desktop computer, sitting at a desk. Field work may require walking long distances over uneven sometimes steep terrain. Field conditions can include exposure to mosquitos, ticks, and inclement weather (heat, rain or cold). Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Possession of a valid driver's license is required. Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills. Requires driving on both primitive, rural, and highly congested urban roads. Shall be required to wear a CDFW uniform on a regular, continuing basis. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations as pre-condition of working with carnivores or rabies vector species.

Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals. Must be able to qualify to use a pneumatic firearm (e.g., for chemical immobilization of wildlife) and be willing to conduct or support humane euthanasia as necessary. Must complete and maintain mandatory wildlife chemical immobilization and restraint training and pneumatic firearms(e.g., for chemical immobilization of wildlife) and be willing to conduct or support humane euthanasia as necessary. This is a permanent, full-time position located at the the Bay Delta Region Headquarters in Fairfield, California. An alternate designated headquarters location may be considered based on institutional need. This position offers the possibility of a telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.
