Job Description and Duties
Enjoy your passion for hunting and the outdoors and develop work skills while you're at it! The Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in Suisun City, California is looking for new seasonal staff to assist with a variety of hands-on duties. This Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid position will:
Perform the routine work and general manual labor involved with day-to-day operations of a wildlife area, including minor carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, fencing, and cement work projects; posting wildlife area signage; litter and exotic plant removal; planting native vegetation; and installing, operating, and maintaining fish screens and associated water control structures.
Assist with the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area's pheasant and waterfowl hunts by assisting at the Hunter Check Station and conducting hunter bird identification/verification and logging. Document waterfowl band recovery data. Assist with Tule Elk retrieval during hunt program.
Use specialized equipment in the maintenance and creation of habitat areas on the wildlife area, including operating mowing equipment utilized for weed control purposes. Maintain and repair specialized equipment and repair buildings; keeping simple records; prepare simple draft reports; and computing.
Assist an Environmental Scientist in conducting surveys by vehicle on pheasant, waterfowl, and raptors; tabulate waterfowl, pheasant, dove, and elk harvest information; and maintain public use information and trends, and document survey and public use data.
Perform work for seasonal activities at other wildlife areas as needed.
The Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Work requires irregular hours, varying workweek schedules, and weekends to accommodate field work, elk hunts, and hunter check station duties. Field days can be 10-12 hours long and start early in the morning. Must be able to tolerate mosquitoes, ticks, and inclement weather (e.g., heat, rain, wind, etc.); and walk distances over uneven, muddy terrain/marshy conditions. Ability to work on various small watercrafts (motorized and self-propelled [kayak]) and land-based equipment. Wearing a Department of Fish and Wildlife uniform is required as a condition of employment while conducting field work and public work duties. This position is limited to 189 days or 1,500 hours—whichever is the best benefit to the employee—for each twelve-month period of the employee’s appointment. Must possess a valid driver's license.
