Basic Function Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Success, Advising, the Student Success Specialist is responsible for advising first-year students in their academic plans and progress.

Schedules appointments, meets with first-year students to review their academic plans, and performs all other duties related to academic advisement;

serves as initial resource for students. E

Assists in coordinating and evaluating the Students Taking Academic Responsibility (STAR) and other academic support programs;

implements the provisions of the program; monitors and advises assigned conditionally admitted students for the STAR program and other academic support programs. E

Supports reception area and office visitors in a timely manner with tact and professionalism for brief meeting questions and concerns;

refers higher level student questions and concerns to the appropriate Student Success Counselor and / or Assistant Director of Student Success. E

  • Works collaboratively with other Student Success Specialists, Counselors and departments ensuring advising is done consistently and accurately among the staff. E
  • Coordinates outreach communications internally and externally with first-year students, faculty and other relevant partners by email, phone, in-person, or other communication mediums;
  • responds to phone and email inquiries in a timely manner; provides accurate information related to : workshops, training, presentations, classroom instruction and test administration;

refers students to appropriate campus resources as needed. E

  • Serves as a liaison between the University and the students with respect to degree requirements and student progress; provides students with accurate, timely, complete, and comprehensive information on University policies and practices. E
  • Monitors academic progress of students including analyzing reports, identifying current and potential needs or problem areas (.

study skills, tutoring), and refer students to appropriate campus resources. E

  • Maintains student advising files in a confidential manner according to FERPA guidelines; maintains counseling and advising logs as appropriate. E
  • Completes ongoing training and professional development required for this position. E
  • Assists the Director with special projects. E
  • Prepares letters, memos and other correspondence. E
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

E Essential Duties Knowledge Of

  • Relevant rules and regulations pertaining to functional area, including the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and oral / written communication skills.
  • Effective academic resources and strategies, including but not limited to motivation, time management, learning styles, and various forms of study skills.
  • Computer software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Datatel.
  • Campus policies and procedures, including institution catalogs and handbook.
  • Center for Student Success programs and services.

  • Multitask simultaneously in an organized, detailed manner with accuracy.
  • Operate a computer and assigned office equipment, including the use of software programs.
  • Meet schedules and time lines, including the ability to plan and organize work.
  • Prepare comprehensive narrative and statistical reports.

Minimum Qualifications Any combination equivalent to : A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and six months of related experience in counseling, academic advising, student services, teaching, or administrative or customer support experience involving extensive public contact.

  • Preferred Qualifications A bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in the higher education field. Licenses and other requirements Ability to travel and work flexible hours as needed Physical Abilities Detect to understand appropriate written correspondence;
  • operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; communicate to exchange information in person, in writing, on the telephone and by email;
  • stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and / or retrieve files Environment Office environment with constant interruptions and multiple projects;

possible evenings and weekends, or holiday duties. Hiring Range $24.00-$25.00
