SUMMARY

Under the general direction from the CFO, and serving as an integral member of the management team, the Senior Director compiles and analyzes financial information for the Association; develops integrated revenue and expense analyses, projections, reports, and presentations; creates and analyzes monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and ensures financial information has been recorded accurately; identifies trends and developments in competitive environments and presents findings to CFO and senior management; performs financial forecasting, reporting, and reconciliation of internal accounts; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; performs a variety of complicated tasks. This position leads and manages all areas of accounting for multiple entities including, but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, month/year-end closes, budgeting/forecasting, and yearly audits, by leading and directing the work of others; performs a variety of other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, manages, and oversees the daily functions, operations, and activities of the Finance and Accounting Department.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned area; recommends within policy, appropriate service and staffing levels; recommends and administers policies and procedures. Provides leadership to develop and maintain a high-performing team and supports ongoing development of skills.
  • Develops and standardizes procedures and methods to improve and continuously monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of assigned programs, service delivery methods, and procedures; assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement and makes recommendations to CFO and senior management for implementation.
  • Analyzes and reconciles various balance sheet accounts, such as inter-company, accrual and deferral accounts including necessary journal entries.
  • Manages month-end closes, reviews entries prepared by staff and other departments; reviews general ledger data; ensures that all departments have closed.
  • Manages and reviews the preparation of monthly bank reconciliations, investigates, and resolves any unreconciled differences and prepares worksheets for the Consolidated Cash Flow Statement.
  • Assists CFO with year-end audit; analyzes data and prepares work papers for auditors.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual budgets and budget revisions.
  • Assists in various other audits.
  • Ensures the integrity of the general ledger system.
  • Manages the processing and maintenance of fixed asset information including depreciation.
  • Assists various other departments with accounting-related issues.
  • Prepares various accounting reports for the CFO, other departments, and senior management including monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements.
  • Develops reports to assist with analysis.
  • Reads and demonstrates an understanding and adherence to CSBA values, policies, and practices.
  • Demonstrates respect, honesty, and professionalism at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position is required to manage and direct other staff, with the responsibility of overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of those roles. This position will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and all applicable laws. Overall responsibilities of this position include, but may not be limited to, interviewing, training, timekeeping and wage & hour management, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing and resolving complaints.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Financial and operational management, including generally accepted accounting principles, financial forecasting, budgeting, staff planning and relevant laws and regulations.
  • Accounting/ERP software and advanced Excel.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Internal and/or External Auditing practices.
  • Employee supervision practices, either directly or through subordinate levels of supervision, including work planning, assignment, review and evaluation, and the training of staff in work procedures; contract management; and researching issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and presenting effective staff reports; and general principles of risk management related to the functions of assigned areas.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and Association staff.
  • Techniques for effectively representing the Association in contacts with governmental agencies, community groups, and various business, professional, educational, regulatory, and legislative organizations; techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and Association staff.

Ability to:

  • Recommend and implement goals, objectives, and practices for providing effective and efficient services.
  • Administer complex and technical programs, projects, and services in an independent and cooperative manner.
  • Evaluate and develop improvements in operations, procedures, policies, or methods; research, analyze, and evaluate new service delivery methods, procedures, and techniques; and interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Conduct complex research projects, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical staff reports.
  • Effectively represent the Association in meetings with member organizations, other education institutions, governmental agencies, community groups, and various businesses, professional, and regulatory organizations, and in meetings with the public.
  • Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner,
  • Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with major coursework in accounting, finance, or related field with five (5) years of progressive, responsible accounting experience, plus four (4) years of supervisory/management experience.
  • CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • Public Accounting experience preferred

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Employee works in a primarily sedentary office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances.
  • Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines, instructions, and policies.
  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person, and over the telephone; must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push and pull drawers open and closed in the execution of duties.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer for long periods of time and have the dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Employee must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds, a hand truck available to assist.
  • Must be able to travel overnight on occasion throughout the state of California.
  • Must have the dexterity and mobility to facilitate or present information to a group, access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, and operate standard facilitation equipment.
  • Occasional travel.
