About the Department / Position :

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Academic Advising and Career Development (AVP AACD), the Transfer Specialist will serve as the primary point of contact for programming and advisement questions for prospective and newly entering transfer students.

The incumbent will develop transfer and adult-learner oriented programming that supports the transition of transfer students to CSUDH, lead, monitor, and report on key transfer student initiatives at DH that originate from the AVP AACD organization, and serve as the key liaison between transfer programming at DH and the Student Success Centers.

To achieve this, the Transfer Specialist will work as a critical team member, building intra- and inter-campus connections and collaborations that span divisions to equitably improve transfer rates and completion.

The Transfer Specialist will be a key partner to the Reenrollment Specialist in ensuring expert advisement and case management support of students who are returning to CSUDH with transfer credits to be applied and will utilize their skill to support pre-advisement of prospective transfer students in order to increase prospective transfer student yields.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Identify, analyze, and eliminate roadblocks to timely degree completion for transfer students and propose changes to academic and administrative policies to support their success.
  • Partner with Student Success Center Directors and their staff to track and support transfer students by facilitating handoff of transfers to their appropriate centers and by following up on transfer needs identified by the centers.
  • Analyze student persistence and completion data for transfer student cohorts. Identify equity gaps in transfer student outcomes and work to close such gaps across the AACD organization and with AACD interdivisional and campus partners.
  • Develop programming / campaigns that enhance transfer rates and equitable, timely degree completion.
  • Collaborate with student success center staff and faculty in the delivery of workshops and student retention initiatives aimed at support of California Promise Scholars, including engagement with the implementation and delivery of such at orientation events.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to advise students using assets-based, equity-centered approaches individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served.
