Job SummaryThe Senior Program Director of Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Programming, Inclusion, and Belonging is an integral member of the Office of Strategy Implementation, with a focus on advancing inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging among Caltech’s postdoctoral scholar population. Under the general direction of the Vice President for Strategy Implementation and reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Assessment, the Senior Program Director will manage and implement projects to advance postdoc inclusion and belonging while providing programming to engage and support this vital population.
Essential Job Duties
  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of Caltech’s Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, including recruitment of prospective applicants, application and selection processes, professional development, and community-building programming, advising Fellows and referral to campus resources intended to enhance their postdoctoral experience, and program assessment.
  • Manage administrative and budgetary processes integral to the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, including working with the President’s Diversity Council to facilitate Fellow selection process, coordinating with grant managers and Division administrators to onboard new Fellows, facilitating the Fellows’ participation in on- and off-campus professional development and other enrichment opportunities, and interfacing with external funders to discuss program outcomes.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of best practices in supporting postdocs as creating programming for current postdoc fellows including professional development curriculum, community building events and networking opportunities.
  • Connect postdocs with campus resources to address concerns or for career development and meet with Fellows regularly to advise and discuss career progress.
  • Develop and implement research and professional development activities intended to promote diversity, inclusion, and belonging among Fellows and other Caltech postdoctoral scholars, as well as collaborate with campus partners on various IDEA-related initiatives that engage the Caltech postdoc community.
  • Collaborate with external partners at peer institutions to develop tools and approaches to promote postdoc diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Develop and conduct research and assessment activities to inform institutional approaches to advance diversity, inclusion, and belonging among postdocs.
  • Apply sound methodological practices to collect and analyze quantitative, qualitative data regarding the experiences of postdocs at Caltech.
  • Create and administer surveys and qualitative research tools, secure IRB approval for research activities, and communicate research findings to internal and external audiences.
  • Serve as a liaison to Postdoc Nexus, a cross-institutional collaborative effort intended to promote postdoc diversity, inclusion, and belonging, and manage Caltech’s participation.
  • Manage and administer the web-based Postdoc Portal, including site administration, data management, troubleshooting, and user support.
  • Plan and execute Portal updates and expansion in collaboration with developers at partner institutions.
  • Collaborate with external partners to create and implement Postdoc Nexus professional development activities, organize Postdoc Nexus conferences and in-person meetings, disseminate project outcomes, and secure grant funding for future Postdoc Nexus activities.
  • Partner with staff from Caltech’s Center for Inclusion and Diversity to support the implementation and assessment of the student research component of the First -Year Research Success Institute (FSRI) summer program.
  • Develop and implement a plan to collect data on student experiences and outcomes of the FSRI research program.
  • Manage weekly communications with student research pods and research mentor; ensure completion of weekly student research journals and weekly research mentor reports.
  • Interview students and research mentors to collect feedback and qualitative data on FSRI research experiences.
  • Provide students and research mentors support as appropriate, escalating cases to the FSRI Director and Faculty Consultant when deemed necessary.
  • Assist the coordination and facilitation of key events related to FSRI’s summer research experience.
  • Participate in weekly summer FSRI team meetings and contributes updates regarding research components.
Basic Qualifications
  • An advanced degree in a relevant STEM, education, or social science field.
  • Broad understanding of equity issues within higher education and in-depth knowledge of the experiences of postdoctoral scholars from historically underrepresented populations in STEM fields, the challenges they face, and how to overcome them most effectively.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in administering and managing DEI-related projects within higher education.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining programmatic grants that support diversity, equity, and inclusion for postdoctoral scholars from federal agencies and private foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, design, and implement, and assess effective programs and policies that address issues of diversity in higher education, preferably in science, engineering, and math.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the implications of data, including identifying trends, outliers and results that seem amiss.
  • Ability to craft meaningful and actionable information from rigorous analysis of complex data.
  • Excellent diplomacy skills and ability to converse easily, with courtesy and clarity, with all members of the Caltech community and beyond.
  • Dynamic leadership and vision.
  • Demonstrated cross-cultural competencies, including strong emotional intelligence and the ability to engage and build relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, Trustees, and students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated passion to learn and innovate, while seeking alternate views, opinions, and options.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and information with absolute discretion.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to shifting priorities.

Hiring Range $88,900 to $109,000 per year
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
