About the Position:
Under the general direction of the Branch Chief of Business Intelligence and Automation, a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent, a Transportation Engineer (Electrical) (TEE), performs transportation data collection, engineering analysis, quality control and assurance, other data engineering duties in support of the Business Intelligence and Automation Branch. Designs, develops, and tests new electronic equipment. Assesses and advances cutting-edge electrical and electronic traffic control systems. Evaluates both existing and emerging technologies within Transportation Management Systems (TMS), including Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. Applies these technologies across various scenarios, utilizing computer vision to address transportation and electrical engineering challenges spanning both motorized and non-motorized aspects. Determines the optimal timing for refreshing camera hardware to support both traffic management and safety-related applications. Conducts engineering studies of current methods of materials testing (including operational requirements and procedures, service demands, equipment needs and cost analysis). Works with the Division of Information Technology (IT) to adopt new electrical equipment as the standard for the statewide program and for deployment for pilot programs. Investigates applications of new electrical technology, conducts research, and makes electrical engineering-based recommendations for implementation. Assists in the evaluation and development of new electrical and electronic traffic control and lighting systems. Explores the use of video based Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an off-pavement solution to obtain lane speeds, vehicle classifications, and vehicle/bicycle/pedestrian counts. Provides electrical engineering analysis, evaluation, and correlation of test data. Works with the Division of Information Technology and the Division of Research, Innovation, and System Information to resolve electrical data quality and reporting issues. Identifies future needs that improve census station coverage for traffic, freight route, ramp, cross-street, and active transportation modes across the state highway system. Innovates census facts collection methods, procedures, quality control and assurance to improve program efficiency.
