Cambridge Public Schools is Hiring a Grade 1/2 English Teacher, Chinese Immersion Program Near Cambridge, MA

Position: Grade 1/2 English Teacher, Chinese Immersion Program

Martin Luther King, Jr. School

Martin Luther King, Jr. School Community:

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School is an innovative public school where every student learns mandarin Chinese. The King School provides two options for pursuing Chinese language study. Students may pursue a sequential Two-Way Immersion option focused on the development of biliteracy in both English and Mandarin Chinese. Or, students may choose to balance daily Chinese lessons with other core content. For Grades JK – 2, classrooms follow two learning strands, which merge together for English and Chinese instruction for Grades 3 – 5.

We believe our programs prepare, enrich, and challenge our students for success as global citizens and scholars. Our students benefit from an expanded learning day. This provides opportunities for increased enrichment and more time on core subject areas. The extended day offers teachers the flexibility to set the pace and intensity of learning based on student needs and interests. This time also enables us to offer enhanced enrichment that captures students’ curiosity.

The Role:

Our innovative school is seeking a talented first and second grade teacher beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. S/he will teach all skills and concepts in the first and second grade Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The teacher will be responsible for implementing differentiated, innovative instruction to a diverse group of student learners. The teacher will have an appreciation and awareness for language acquisition and the unique developmental needs of early elementary children. The teacher will work closely and cooperatively with grade level, Chinese Immersion and JK-2 clusters, and whole school teams of faculty including special educators, ESL educators, instructional coaches and paraprofessional aides. The teacher will incorporate a variety of assessment strategies including district wide exams and formative assessment in order to inform and modify instruction and target intervention and enrichment needs.

Our 50/50 Chinese-English Dual Language Immersion Program is designed for both native Chinese speakers and native English speakers to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in both languages while realizing their academic potential in all of their academic subjects.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming First and Second Grade English Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • Awareness of the developmental needs of elementary aged learners and the strategies to meet those needs through the curriculum.
  • Previous and successful experience working in a multicultural environment that includes students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, alongside the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff and student body.
  • A commitment to equity in education and a belief that all students are capable of excelling in their education.
  • Massachusetts certification in Elementary Education required.

Cambridge Public Schools is committed to slowing and/or stopping the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, as a condition of employment with Cambridge Public Schools, all new hires will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 no later than their first day of work.

How to Join Our Team:

Please upload a resume and thoughtful cover letter, outlining how your skills, experience, and commitment to equity in education meet the qualifications of the position as well as stating how you heard about this opportunity.

At the Cambridge Public Schools, we are committed to cultivating an environment where diverse perspectives and backgrounds are embraced, acknowledging that a team reflecting diversity of race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, age, gender, marital/domestic partner status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, and veteran status allows us to serve our communities better. To that end, we welcome and encourage applicants to bring their authentic selves when considering employment opportunities within our school district.
