Campaign Legal Center Inc is Hiring a Communications Associate Near Washington, DC

Job Description

Job Description

Campaign Legal Center (CLC) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing democracy through law. We are seeking a Communications Associate with strong writing skills and a passion for reforming democracy to join our communications team. The Communications Associate will develop written content to be used across CLC’s communications channels to elevate CLC’s thought leadership and work on voting rights, redistricting, and elections.

Role Description

The Communications Associate will develop short and long-form content designed for internal and external audiences. The position requires an excellent writer and researcher who is eager to learn, pays attention to detail and has strong time and project management skills. The ideal candidate is resourceful and enjoys conducting research to inform their writing, stays up to date with the latest democracy news, recognizes emerging issues and can craft content quickly to highlight these trends.

The Communications Associate position is full-time. CLC is in Washington, D.C. and preference will be given to candidates based in the Washington Metropolitan Area, but qualified remote candidates are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit content, including breaking news updates, long-form analysis pieces, reports, media newsletters, blog posts and other content focused on voting rights, redistricting, and instilling trust in elections.
  • Collaborate with communications, litigation and policy staff to produce and edit high-quality written materials such as blogs, reports, fact sheets, case pages and op-eds.
  • Copyedit communications material to adhere to messaging and brand guidance, DEI values and AP style.
  • Closely follow voting rights, redistricting, election sabotage and election litigation, and pitch blog ideas in addition to working on content assigned by Communications Managers.
  • Collaborate with team members to support the creation/review content for web, email and social media.
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends when required for rapid response.
  • Perform other related duties and projects.

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience working in nonprofit communications, journalism, on campaigns, on the Hill and/or for a public affairs firm.
  • Excellent research and writing skills. An understanding of AP style is required.
  • Solid understanding of voting rights, elections and redistricting issues and trends.
  • Historical knowledge of disenfranchised communities and a desire to learn more about the barriers to voting and fair representation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, ability to quickly learn nuances in the work, and extremely good judgment.
  • Ability to write quick and accurate content that is optimized for search engine results.
  • Demonstrated skill in utilizing tested messaging in writing.
  • Experience understanding and explaining legal or legislative concepts.
  • Proven ability to build respectful and positive relationships with colleagues.
  • Creativity and enthusiasm for the work.
  • An openness to new ideas and differing approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to receive feedback, take accountability, and continually adapt, grow, learn and improve.
