Description Position DescriptionPosition Title: Mental Health Specialist
Qualifications: Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor or Licenses Professional Counselor (LPCC), Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor (LPCC-S) preferred
Reports To: Mental Health Team Supervisor, Special Education Director, Principal
Job Goal: Provide individualized or group counseling services to children; assess
and remediate identified social/emotional challenges which inhibit
successful participation in the general education setting; this may be
accomplished through therapeutic services, assistance in academic
concerns related to mental health concerns.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Has knowledge of social implications of problems of human emotion with students who present with mental health challenges.
  • Provides individual or group counseling, and follow up as identified in the Evaluation Team Report (ETR)/Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Acts as a Related Service Provider and assists the Intervention Specialist, participating as a team member in the development and implementation of ETRs and IEPs.
    • Maintain consistent therapy schedule with students on caseload.
    • Develop appropriate mental health and/or social-emotional treatment goals, while collaborating with the student/family and IEP team.
    • Implements and/or assure implementation of appropriate social-emotional coping strategies.
    • Progress monitors student social-emotional learning levels by observing, evaluating, documenting, and communicating essential information about student mental/emotional health.
  • Acts as an advocate on behalf of students and families.
  • Has skills in handling mental health crises, intervening as appropriate and evaluating student safety if there are escalated social-emotional concerns.
  • Responds to potentially suicidal behavior as appropriate and is prepared to address such crises.
  • Works with assigned students individually and/or in groups to address mental health concerns, social skills, stress reduction, anger management, self-concept and related issues.
  • Provides consultation, training and support to staff who have contact with identified students.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, social workers, children services, etc. to assure and obtain all needed services for identified students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and commitment to the principles and concepts that all children can learn and have access to the greatest extent possible to typical peers and age appropriate curriculum.
  • Other duties as assigned by the special education supervisor and/or building principal.
Other Job Functions
  • Abide by Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board (CSEMFT) Code of Ethics/Laws & Rules
  • Assist with mental health interns & practicum students in your building as needed, as directed by the Mental Health Supervisor.
  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
