The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio is a professional theatre company located in downtown Columbus,Ohio. The Contemporary works under a Small Professional Theatre (SPT) contract with Actor’s EquityAssociation.

Job Description

The Master Electrician (ME) manages lighting for The Contemporary productions. The ideal candidatewill be able to oversee the installation of the lighting plot for each show and prepare guest artists forsuccess. The ME collaborates with lighting designers to provide all lighting elements of each productionby using current stock, facilitating purchases and rentals, and/or borrowing lighting instruments andmaterials, to ensure the timely and accurate realization of all lighting elements.

This position recruits and manages crews of skilled theatrical electricians, while managing and reportingtheir budgeted hours.

The Master Electrician, with support from the Production Manager, will oversee the correspondence andexecution of lighting rentals, sales and shop resources to and from outside parties.Additionally, the ME is responsible for ensuring the lighting shop and stock are clean, organized, andsafe places to work.The position reports to and is supported by the Production Manager and will collaborate with the entireContemporary staff, as well as applicable contractorsAdditional Information:This is a part-time, hourly position paying $20/hour. You can expect between40-46 hours per show. This position worksflexible hours most weeks and responds to notes aroundtechnical rehearsals that take place evenings and weekends. Duties and Responsibilities
Facilitates the installation of the lighting plot for The Contemporary productions by assisting thedesigners to shop for, rent, assemble, troubleshoot, and complete work notes, generated fromlighting install and technical rehearsals; and assisting in necessary adjustments.Work with individual show designers to create a viable design vision.In collaboration with lighting designers, manages and tracks lighting budgets.Runs a weekly channel check during the run of a show to ensure the plot is functioning properly.Addresses any notes that may arise during channel check or reported in Stage Manager’sPerformance Report.Participates in recruiting and supervising electricians and lighting staffin collaboration with theProduction Manager.Oversees overhire electricians during installation, hang and focus.Ensure all lighting paperwork (show inventory, magic sheet, top/end of show checklist etc) iscomplete.Oversees the operation and organization of The Contemporary’s lighting shop, storage, inventoryand needs including purchases, maintenance, rentals.Assists in the maintenance of lighting stock by organizing and restocking instruments andequipment, cleaning and maintaining functional use of instruments and equipment, andpreparing instruments and equipment for productions.Fosters a work environment that demonstrates cultural competency and leads with TheContemporary’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent time management skills.Ability to solve problems creatively to keep production designers within budget and on schedule.Strong commitment to health and safety standards.Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in order to build an anti-racistorganization.Experience, ability, and commitment to working with individuals and teams that are mixedacross lines of difference such as race, gender-identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age,class, and immigration status.Must be willing and able to workflexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends,reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theatre.Light lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of supplies, etc., up to 60 lbs., as well as occasionalstooping, kneeling, and crouching.Ability to work at heights. Agility is a plus.Credentials and Experience2 years experience as a working electrician.Understanding of rigging systems.Experience with light board programs and operation.Experience with budgets, paperwork, and deadlines.
