Veterinary Surgery Ward Nurse

About This Role
The surgery ward nurse is a critical part of the surgery team who cares for patients post-operatively and supports the surgeons and surgical nurses. This is an early career position where the right person will be trained and utilized to function as a vital team member while learning and honing the skills necessary to progress in various areas of veterinary medicine.
Responsibilities and Functions
  • Obtain vital signs, provide food, and monitor patients for pain/comfort following surgical procedures.
  • Check IV catheters for patency and bandages for fit and cleanliness.
  • Administer oral and intravenous medications according to doctors' orders.
  • Walk postoperative patients, using assistance when required.
  • Communicate directly with the surgical nurses and surgeons regarding patients.
  • Maintain ward cleanliness, including laundry and washing dishes.
  • Assist the surgical nurses and assistants by restraining pets for radiographs when necessary.

  • The tentative schedule is: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 3p-11p and Saturday 7a-3p.
    • Schedules include some weekends and a holiday shift rotation.
    • The initial training schedule may differ.

Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a veterinary assistant or technician, with the knowledge of and the ability to administer oral and intravenous medications confidently
  • Ability to solve mathematical equations for medication dosages
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to problem-solving
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Lifting and restraint of pets at least 50 pounds and the ability to work on feet most of the day
