Position Summary:

The CNO oversees, guides, and advises the day-to-day operations of the departments assigned ensuring they provide quality customer service in their area of expertise.

The CNO will operate as a key member of the organization’s senior leadership team, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the management team.

The CNO reports directly to and is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The individual, as a part of the administrative team, will work with management staff to meet the goals of the organization.

Serves as member of Executive Leadership Team

Job Duties

Oversees and directs activities for all entities of CMC Clinical departments in accordance with applicable employment laws, government and agency regulations, and corporate policies while supporting the organization’s mission and strategic development.

Assists and collaborates with those Department Managers/ Supervisors assigned directly to CNO to uphold and maintain quality service through leading by example and assisting with all applicable laws, government and agency regulations, and corporate policies while supporting the organization and department missions.

 Core Responsibilities

Is accountable for patient care services throughout Caribou Medical Center. Participates, initiates and supports organizational mechanisms and systems that ensure the provision of effective care.

  1. Builds an effective division of clinical services which ensures the success of patient care teams in establishing, fostering and maintaining of suitable, caring environment for clinical practice of all disciplines and for patient care.
  2. Assures the integration, continuity and coordination of interdisciplinary practice among patient care delivery services and other patient care departments.
  3. Establishes with the staff and in collaboration with Administration a vision for patient care that is actualized through operational models of practice based on standards of care, practice and performance.
  4. Ensures the definition and realization of Nursing Practice at CMC.
  5. Serves as the leader and is the chief spokesperson for the practice of nursing throughout the CMC system. Represents the community of CMC on a local, regional and national level.
  6. Participates in the hospital-wide quality improvement program and serves as a member on appropriate committees which assure that recommended quality improvements are examined and implemented.

Is responsible for the effectiveness of the division's organizational reporting relationships which are measured by appropriate and successful delegation and accountability.

  1. Provides leadership and supervision to departmental managers within Clinical Operations.
  2. Communicates, interprets and operationalizes the vision and mission of CMC while providing administrative support to departmental managers in order that they may achieve their departmental goals.
  3. Incorporates nursing and other clinical expertise into the process of administrative problem solving.
  4. Collaborates and establishes productive working relationships with the Medical Staff to facilitate the integration and delivery of quality patient care. Articulates the various clinical disciplines' perspectives on all medical staff committees when required.
  5. Articulates and represents patient care issues to the Board of Directors.

Participates in the effective management of informational resources.

  1. Participates in a system-wide assessment of management informational needs and the development of related policies and programs.

Participates in development of strategic plan and management action plan.

  1. As a member of senior leadership, this position contributes to accomplishing objectives of the strategic plan and the management action plan.
  2. Interprets the roles and contributions of the clinical disciplines in relation to the hospital's strategic planning process.
  3. Encourages and provides mechanisms for participation of department supervisors and staff in the strategic planning activities.
  4. Assures coordination with administration in the development and implementation of the strategic plan.
  5. Participates in decisions regarding the delineation of patient care services in relation to the strategic plan.
  6. Participates on task forces, committees or projects that advance the goals of the strategic plan.

Ensures that the Division of Patient Care Services has educational standards and programs that support current professional standards and research.

  1. Participates in and seeks opportunities for cooperative efforts with other departments, disciplines and agencies.
  2. Endorses educational opportunities for staff that ensure professional development and success in delivering quality patient care services through fostering a climate of enthusiasm and support for innovative learning.
  3. Assures compliance with standards of accrediting and licensing agencies relevant to the delivery of nursing and other patient care services.

Oversees staff to support department operations.

  1. Interviews and hires staff which support our culture.
  2. Oversees department training and orientation.
  3. Evaluates staff within the appropriate time period.
  4. Addresses employee relations issues according to policy.
  5. Addresses staff turnover and utilizes retention strategies.
  6. Maintains an excellent department safety record.

Oversees financial performance of department(s).

  1. Prepares and monitors budgets.
  2. Forecasts revenue and estimates expenses.
  3. Monitors monthly budget reports. Provides monthly variance reports.
  4. Measures and evaluates departmental productivity.

 Manages opportunities for performance improvement.

  1. Identifies opportunities for quality improvement.
  2. Works with others to develop a plan of action.
  3. Implements changes and monitors results by submitting timely reports to the performance improvement committee.

Member of Caribou Medical Center Executive Leadership Team.

  1. Participates in the development, implementation and success of strategic plan and management action plan.

  1. Maintains awareness and understands the organization wide compliance plan. Familiar with and adheres to CMC's Code of Conduct policy
  2. Reports any violation or suspected violation of this Code or other hospital policies or procedures to supervisor, Compliance Officer or through the compliance hotline.
  3. Attends and/or completes mandatory training regarding organizational compliance.

Qualifications


Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or similar entity
  • 3-5 to five years of operating management experience in a healthcare environment.

Desired Skills:

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of all applicable employment laws, government regulations and corporate policies which affect work conditions and the management of personnel.
  • Proven ability to develop training topics and materials based on feedback from the constituents.
  • Excellent consulting and facilitation skills. Strong ability to promote good public relations with patients' families, visitors, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to think strategically and have the communication and leadership skills to follow through on development plans.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to appropriately set priorities, and manage multiple demands.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and to deliver high quality written and verbal presentations. Excellent oral and written presentation skills, as well as strong PC skills.
  • Must listen actively and accurately while encouraging input from others. Must coach and correct constructively to improve the performance of team members. Provide clear directions. Maintain an ongoing dialogue with employees to ensure continual progress.
  • Interpersonally savvy, relating well to diverse groups of people throughout the organization. Able to build rapport and form constructive relationships.
