Carleton College is Hiring an Assistant Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center Near Northfield, MN

The Assistant Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) reports to and works collaboratively with the Director to support the mission, vision and guiding principles of the GSC. The Assistant Director will work with the Director to implement comprehensive student life programming relating to gender and sexuality, specifically centering LGBTQIA identities and issues affecting those communities. In addition to serving as a resource to students, staff and faculty; The Assistant Director manages the GSC-affiliated residential programming, and the GSC Programming Board.

The GSC contributes to creating a dynamic campus community that supports and celebrates sexual and gender diversity. To accomplish this, the GSC hosts events, programs, workshops and offers resources and support on LGBTQIA issues. The GSC works with other campus organizations and offices to strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus community that promotes gender equality and awareness and welcomes people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is part of the Division of Student Life.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

Direct Responsibilities

  • Provide advising, resources, and support to LGBTQIA students and students exploring aspects of their gender and/or sexuality
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of events, programs, and resources to encourage thoughtful reflection, individual growth, and community building on issues related to gender and sexuality, centering LGBTQIA identities and issues affecting those communities
  • Recruit, train, supervise and provide professional development for 10-15 GSC Associates (peer leaders/student employees) in the areas of First Year Engagement, GSC Workshops, LGBTQIA Residential Communities, Community Engagement & Advocacy, and Marketing/Communications (10-15 student employees)
  • Lead coordination of campus-wide events like LGBTQ History Month, Trans Empowerment Week, Exhale Identity Series, Pride Week
  • Co-coordinate Rainbow Retreat and GSC Senior Celebration
  • Maintain departmental website and Queer Corner Weekly newsletter
  • Advise and coordinate resident selection for GSC sponsored housing
  • Advise GSC Programming Board student organizations and provide leadership development opportunities to affiliated organizations

General Responsibilities

  • Promote a community culture of inclusion
  • Be an active and accessible presence on campus
  • Represent the Gender & Sexuality Center and the Division of Student Life and Carleton College at key events, as needed, including, but not limited to: New Student Week, alumni events, community outreach and recruitment events, regional/national professional associations, and internal college committees
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and student organizations to address continuing and emerging campus needs related to LGBTQIA populations
  • Establish, maintain, and promote effective relationships with individuals, campus offices, alumni, related organizations, and external agencies
  • Attend staff retreats, meetings, and trainings as needed

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

Master’s degree and a minimum of 1 year of directly related prior experience

In addition to meeting the above education/experience requirements, the following skills and experience is required:

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of issues related to gender and sexuality identity development, LGBTQIA student support, and institutional climate for LGBTQIA students
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of student development theory and current issues in the field of Student Affairs
  • Experience with event planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues
  • Ability to work autonomously with limited supervision
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience supervising student staff

Preferred:

  • Experience and understanding of the residential liberal arts experience
  • Basic website design and management skills
  • Proficient in Google Suite

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
