Position Details

This is an open recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill current vacant positions. The eligibility list will also be used for substitutes to work on an on-call, as needed basis, and to fill any vacancies which may occur within a period of one year, or until the eligibility list is depleted. The current vacancy is 8 hours per day and the hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The recruitment process will consist of a written examination and a structured interview.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of assigned administrators and the Coordinator-Grounds Maintenance, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; maintain grounds and other assigned areas to assure a safe, clean and attractive environment for students, staff and the public.
Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; prepare and fertilize soil; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system.
Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges and shrubs; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; edge walkways; sweep litter from walks, driveways and other assigned areas; empty waste receptacles.
Inspect playground and other school equipment and areas to assure safety and proper operating condition as required; identify and report safety issues and hazards to appropriate personnel; perform minor maintenance and repairs; respond to emergency grounds maintenance needs as requested.
Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, athletic fields and other assigned areas.
Operate and maintain a variety of power-driven equipment such as mowers, tractors, edgers, dump trucks, skip loaders, backhoes, line markers, lifts and blowers; utilize standard gardening and maintenance hand tools; drive a vehicle to conduct work; check and replenish fuel.
Perform a variety of duties involved in the preparation, lining, painting and marking of athletic fields and related areas in accordance with established specifications and requirements as assigned.
Install, inspect, maintain and repair irrigation systems as assigned; adjust irrigation system clocks and settings as directed clean, adjust, repair and replace sprinkler heads; dig holes and trenches as needed.
Move and arrange furniture and equipment as required; transport supplies and equipment for assigned projects and activities; set up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and activities; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.
Apply pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures as assigned.
Clean storm drains and rain gutters as needed; install and maintain fences as assigned.
Maintain routine records related to assigned activities as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying of flowers, trees and shrubs.
Operation of hand and power tools and equipment used in ground maintenance.
Basic methods and materials used in controlling weeds and other pests.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Proper lifting techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
ABILITY TO:
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas.
Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas.
Line, mark and paint athletic fields in preparation for practices, games and other sporting events.
Maintain athletic areas in a safe condition.
Apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds and other pests as assigned.
Operate and maintain hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds
maintenance.
Maintain routine records related to work performed.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Observe health and safety regulations
Entrance Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of medical and drug screening and a background check that includes fingerprinting and criminal history check.
Selection Process/Additional Information
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as demonstrated in their application materials, will be required to successfully complete a competitive testing process to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which may consist of a written examination, a training and experience evaluation, a performance evaluation, and/ or structured oral interviews. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the appropriate eligibility list will be referred for a final selection interview. The Eligibility List resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no Eligibility List exists (Ed Code 45272).

Pay Increases: New classified employees are typically placed on the first step of the assigned salary range. Step increases occur annually until Step 5 is reached, after which longevity steps are allocated in accordance with years of service.
Benefits: Employees working 4 hours per day or more will be provided an option of Anthem Blue Cross HMO or Kaiser health benefits, as well as Delta Dental and EyeMed Vision benefits; employee contribution amounts are shared with the District and vary depending on number of hours worked per day. (Employees may opt out of medical, dental and vision insurance but may require to provide proof of other health coverage.) The district also pays into a life insurance policy for all employees who work at least 4 hours per day. Additional options for life insurance and disability insurance are available.
Vacation: New employees earn vacation time on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Employees with years of longevity may earn up to 25 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year.
Holidays: Employees are allocated up to 15 scheduled holidays and 2 floating holidays per year; holidays are prorated based on months worked per year.
Sick and Personal Necessity: Employees earn sick leave on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of sick time per year. Employees may use up to 7 days of their sick leave balance each year for personal necessity purposes.
Retirement: Retirement: Employees working 4 or more hours per day and those already contributing to CalPERS will be automatically enrolled into CalPERS upon hire. The District's CalPERS formula is 2% at 55 for employees enrolled with CalPERS prior to 12/31/2012 and 2% at 62 for employees who have already or will enroll into CalPERS as of 01/01/2013 or afterward. Employees working less than 4 hours per day will be included in an alternative retirement plan based on the use of pretax contributions.
