We are looking for a motivated individual to join our private practice in downtown Grand Rapids as an Optometric Technician. As a part of our team, you will assist our optometrists in providing patients with the best in quality eye care, which requires you to use a variety of examination skills and ophthalmic diagnostic equipment. You will greet each patient with a friendly and professional demeanor and convey the confidence, knowledge, and attention to detail that our patients have come to trust. Our ideal candidate has prior experience in an optometry and/or ophthalmology practice; however, we are willing to provide on-the-job training and experience to the right candidate as he or she works toward certification. You also need knowledge of health insurance billing processes and electronic health records handling procedures according to HIPAA guidelines.
Optometric Technician Duties and Responsibilities
Take medical histories and verify pertinent information
Perform visual acuity function and diagnostic tests, including lensometer, tonometry, auto-refractor, topographer, retinal cameras, visual field analyzer and OCT
Dilate the patient’s eyes in preparation for their eye examination
Explain how to properly use eye drops or other medications
Explain how to properly use contact lenses
Assist with inventory management
Clean and sterilize equipment as necessary
Multitask while maintaining close attention to detail
Provide superb customer service to every patient, whether in person, over the phone, or in emails
Optometric Technician Requirements and Qualifications
High school diploma or GED certificate
Prior experience in an optometry and/or ophthalmology environment (preferred)
Completion of certified paraoptometric or ophthalmic assistant/technician program (preferred)
Working knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment
Friendly demeanor and professional appearance
