Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is Hiring a Junior Designer - Temporary Near Pittsburgh, PA

Carnegie Museum of Art’s Junior Designer is a highly creative, curious, nimble, and strategic design professional who brings exceptional visual design and typographic skills along with well-developed problem-solving and time management capabilities. The Junior Designer supports the Senior Designer on a wide range of projects relating to the Museum’s reinstallation and upcoming 59th Carnegie International. The position also assists the Senior Designer in elevating the creative work of the museum by installing a design-centric ethos in the institution’s workflows and processes by fostering a collaborative, efficient, and responsive studio environment. This is a temporary full-time, benefits eligible position. The term of this position runs from September 2024 through the opening of the 59th Carnegie International in May 2026. Qualifications Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree in graphic design required with one-to-two years professional design experience with an emphasis on print, digital, and identity design; or comparable mix of education and experience. Excellent visual design and typographic skills. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with others including fellow designers, institutional peers, and external designers and contractors. Ability to balance several projects simultaneously, manage and complete projects on scheduled deadlines, and work alongside others. Awareness and understanding of current issues and trends in contemporary design, technology, and the arts. Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Working knowledge of HTML5, CSS/SASS, required. Proficiency in computer-based design on a Macintosh platform with related software programs, in particular: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier, and After Effects. Experience in comprehensive design standards related to institutional or corporate identity. Experience in digital video, broadcast and motion graphics, web design, and interactive media. Possess understanding of online publishing, social media, and online communication trends. Experience working with a project management tool such as Asana. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required; must be able to lift and carry boxes and equipment up to 50 lbs. to assist with installation of graphic mock-ups. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:Assist Senior Designer in the design and management of the production of print and digital materials in support of the museum’s projects as they relate to the reinstallation of the Museum’s permanent collection and the 59th Carnegie International Collaborate with colleagues from Collections and Exhibitions, Curatorial, Education and Public Programs, Marketing, Development, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and other departments on successful implementation; ensure the museum’s ability to communicate effectively and creatively with local, national, and international publics.Design and manage the production of, print collateral, and digital assets, including but not limited to identity design, catalogues, exhibition graphics and in-gallery texts, web page layouts, web page graphics, animated typography, social media and video assets, email and presentation templates, marketing graphics and identities, signage and wayfinding, and digital signage.Assist with the development and implementation of large-scale design and publishing initiatives including but not limited to the museum’s visual identity, its website, and various print and digital publishing initiatives.Work closely with the Digital Content Manager to establish and maintain the museum’s standards for digital production and publication.Assist with the maintenance of the museum’s graphic identity across all platforms.Provide art direction for web-related images and typography, marketing graphics, video, social, and digital assets, and online publishing initiatives.Maintain production schedules in Asana, provide constructive criticism of departmental design work, and work collaboratively to ensure the timely completion of the department’s deliverables.Participate in the on-going discussions of design in the local, national, and international community. Attend appropriate seminars, conferences, competitions, and lectures on design and related fields.Other duties as assigned.
