Senior Behavioral Health (RN) Position's Available : 12 Hr. shifts 7A-7PJob SummaryProvides professional nursing care under the direction and supervision of a physician in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of Catholic Care Center -Senior Behavioral Health Program to the standards of evidenced based practice as defined by the state board of nursing. Coordinates and delegates nursing care utilizing the nursing process, which is integrated into the multidisciplinary treatment team plan of care. Accountable for assigned nursing care activities on a shift basis and is responsible for promoting and enhancing professional nursing practice on the unit.
The RN Staff Nurse may also assume Charge Nurse responsibilities as required. Works collaboratively with members of the health care team, maintains a safe environment, and provides patient and family education and program services. Works collaboratively with all members of the health care team to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment and provides compassionate person-centered care to patients consistent with role scope, current regulatory standards, and practice expectations. Demonstrates competency to provide age appropriate care to older adults and geriatric patients age generally 55 years and older.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (The essential responsibilities and accountabilities of this position including interactions with other departments and outside vendors, if applicable, in PRIORITY order.)
General Duties
  • Demonstrates performance of tasks necessary to maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu and provide optimum patient care.
  • Provides direct patient care and assistance as needed and as assigned to support patients with ADLS to include dressing, bathing, eating, feeding, and other tasks as needed to ensure quality care and management of the patient
  • Leads and/or assists with program related activities and groups that reinforce daily goals, learned skills, and cognitive stimulation appropriate in line with role scope and training.
  • Uses program de-escalation techniques that have been trained and support a trauma informed person-centered approach toward patients
  • Performs patient rounds and safety checks and always maintains responsibility to remove and promptly report any safety issue immediately to registered nurse during their shift
  • Performs and documents vital signs on patients as assigned
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of patient care equipment necessary to perform role tasks
  • Follows unit safety practices and procedures at all times to include continuous hand hygiene, appropriate use of PPE, appropriate use of patient assistive devices, falls prevention protocols, and unit contraband prevention.
Registered nurse -will perform the following functions
  • Provides and receives shift report and performs tasks as assigned- may serve in a charge nurse function as assigned
  • Leads plan of care and carries out treatment plan objectives and interventions
  • Oversees care provided to patients and directs care as needed
  • Ensures medications are administered accurately to current physician’s orders
  • Notifies the physician for condition changes or other clinical patient concerns promptly
  • Completes shift assessments timely and accurately documents in the medical record
  • Works with visitors and families to ensure unit safety
  • Monitors and responds to patient condition as indicated per best practice standards, policies, and protocols
  • Supervises and assists licensed practical nursing and non-licensed support staff to ensure tasks are complete to care standards
  • Obtain, receive, transcribe, and carry out physicians ‘orders as directed
  • Perform all aspects of medication administration per physician’s orders
  • Performs near patient testing as ordered
  • Reviews lab results and responds to and reports promptly per policy abnormal or critical lab values to physician
  • Ensures therapeutic program is delivered as scheduled
  • Responds to changes in patient milieu and adjusts assignments and activities as required to maintain a safe and therapeutic care environment
  • Complete accurate and through documentation in the patient record to reflect care provided
  • Receives new patients and completes all aspects of the new admission process
  • Completes discharge process and documentation as assigned
  • Obtain and respond to vital signs and other clinical data as indicated
  • Provides patient education on medications and care provided and documents in the medical record
  • Participates in treatment team meetings as assigned
  • Participates in quality program for the unit
  • Ensures ordered consults are completed as ordered and within time frames required
  • Assesses and implements promptly necessary interventions for fall prevention, suicide risk and prevention, and elopement prevention measures
  • Completes initial nursing treatment plan for new admissions and updates treatment plan to reflect current patient care needs
  • Ensures tasks assigned and performed align with scope of team members during the shift
  • Demonstrates nursing competence and delivers care via the nursing process promptly and to ensure optimal patient outcomes
  • Completes chart audits per shift as assigned per unit protocols
  • Reports adverse events to leadership and completes incident report promptly when indicated
  • Observes and report promptly environment of care issues and submits work orders timely to maintain a safe environment.
Additional Skills And Requirements-
  • Demonstrates good communication skills, time management skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and utilizes critical thinking
  • Demonstrates a basic knowledge of common psychiatric diagnosis and nursing care preformed for this population
  • Participates in hospital educational programs as requested.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned and required.
  • Properly and accurately documents/charts observations and other data related to the clinical condition of the patient.
  • Delivers age appropriate care for the patient population.
RELEVANT WORK - Minimum amount of specifically related experience which is required to perform the role at this level.
EXPERIENCE Note In Other Additional Specific Exp.)
  • Minimum of one year in hospital care setting or senior living environment in a RN role – two years preferred
  • One or more years’ working in an acute senior behavioral health hospital program preferred
  • Basic computer knowledge (Word and Excel) and skills in rehabilitation‐related systems or other electronic medical records systems is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic medical record preferred
  • Telephone and communication skills to effectively facilitate care
Clinical Settings:
  • BLS / CPR and other certification as determined by specialty and clinical setting
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the position
MANAGEMENT (Minimum amount of specifically related experience which is required to perform the role at this level.

Note - Will supervise the clinical care provided by licensed practical nurses and non-licensed personnel during the shift

  • Graduate of Accredited Two-Year Nursing Program - RN – (BSN preferred)
  • Licensed to Practice Nursing in The State of Kansas
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS - (Required licenses, certificates, specific skills, personal traits, e.g., RN, CPA, able to type 90 wpm, detail orientation.)
  • CPI / De-escalation program certification
  • Current CPR/BSL certification
  • Trauma informed care training preferred
  • Dementia specific care advanced training preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS (Specific statements of physical effort required and description of work environment; e.g., prolonged sitting at CRT.)
Physical Requirements:
  • Walking, Standing, and/or Stooping for long periods.
  • Mild to moderate physical labor to complete the tasks.
  • Exposure to blood, chemicals, and other bodily fluids.
  • Frequent moderate to heavy lifting of 50 lbs. or more consistently during the shift
  • Other physical demands that coincide with the duties of direct patient care duties for older adults and individuals with physical and cognitive limitations and disabilities
  • Safety-Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection‐control policies and protocols.
  • Follows hospital policy when disposing of biohazardous materials, labeling and handling of all materials.
  • Confidentiality-Preserves and protects patient and client confidentiality in all situations and with all documentation.
  • Note: can be exposed to unpredictable patient behaviors that can at times be violent consistent with an acute behavioral health care setting
