Description

Job Purpose:
This is a professional position that is responsible for the intervention and assessment of psychological, medical and social needs of adults in crisis. This position is a part of a community based, recovery-oriented team of people who provide prevention and intervention services to voluntary adults in psychiatric crisis at the CRC.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Work with police, family members and other service providers to intervene in and manage the acute crisis phase of adults seen at the CRC.
  2. Assess the medical needs of adult individuals brought to the CRC who are in immediate psychiatric distress. Assessments will be strength based while identifying immediate physical health concerns, psychiatric concerns, as well as social factors that contribute to the mental health crisis status.
  3. Triage individuals needing a higher level of care to the appropriate services.
  4. Intervene in a medical emergency per protocol.
  5. Engage the individual in the process of determining personal needs and wants, strengths, and intervention strategies that may lend itself to resolution of the mental health crisis. 
  6. Link individual with appropriate services in the community that address the underlying causes of the mental health crisis.
  7. Provide supportive follow up that ensures smooth access to and procurement of services in the community.
  8. Participate in collaborative team meetings, which identify strategies that address ongoing consumer concerns.
  9. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other service providers in the Milwaukee area. Serve as liaison with other collaborative medical professionals.
  10. Collect, maintain and synthesize data that will assist in evaluating the quality of service delivery and overall program evaluation.
  11. Participate in collaborative team meetings designed to evaluate ongoing program operations, and address team member concerns.
  12. Provide community education regarding crisis management and the mental health service industry.
  13. Perform duties as delegated under DHS 34 of the State Statutes in relation to psychiatric emergencies.
  14. Ensure consumer medications are secured and RN observes self-administration of medication.
  15. Educate consumers and new team members on medication side effects, as well as the policy and procedure for medication management. Maintain educational and policy materials in clinical field manuals.
  16. Write and review consumer incident reports and ensure proper follow-up. Ensure Director receives a copy of all incident reports. 
  17. Collaborate in the development of policy related to health issues within WHCG agency.
  18. Maintain consistent oral and/or written communication with the CRC Director including regular program status reports.
  19. Will attend and participate in in-service trainings, seminars and conferences as required.
  20. Responsible for adhering to agency policies and procedures while carrying out daily responsibilities.

Qualifications


Required Technical Skills, Experience, Education, and Credentials:

  1. Bachelor's Degree is required in the field of Nursing 
  2. Current WI Nursing License, without limitations that are incompatible with duties, responsibilities, supervision or practice setting.
  3. Minimum of 1 years’ experience working with adults with severe and frequent mental illness.
  4. Travel is not required for this position
  5. Knowledge of mental illness, substance use disorders, psychopharmacology and evidenced based practices specific to needs of the clients.
  6. Awareness of personal, cultural, educational, and environmental aspects of community living for individuals living with a mental illness or substance use disorder.
  7. Knowledge of biological, psychological and social problems and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  8. Knowledge of psychotropic medications and side effects.
  9. Knowledge of community health, social service and advocacy resources available within the community.
  10. Certified or eligible for certification in CPR/First Aid.
  11. Must be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  12. Professional workplace appearance and conduct; friendliness and courtesy to clients, coworkers and vendors.
  13. Effectively communicates and develops good working relationships with co-workers.
  14. Reliability in reporting to work regularly and on time
  15. Experience with adults undergoing a psychiatric crisis.
  16. Knowledge of community resources available to consumers in the Milwaukee County area.
  17. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements 
The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee may experience or must do to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively over the telephone, by computer and in person.
  2. Ability to perform well in a fast paced work environment.
  3. On occasion must be able to push/pull/lift/move objects weighting at least 50 pounds.
  4. Must be able to continuously perform simple/difficult manipulative tasks.
  5. Must have the ability to climb at least two flights of stairs.
  6. Work is performed largely at the Crisis Resource Center, an office environment or other various settings.
  7. Employee is expected to contribute to a 24 hour/7day per week crisis response staffing capability.
  8. This position requires participation in reoccurring ‘on-call’ duties and flexibility in daily work schedule to adequately meet program needs, which may include evenings or weekends.
  9. Possible exposure to blood and body fluids with some exposure to filth, animals (pets), hazardous materials and infectious diseases.
  10. The crisis setting in which this position works regularly utilizes office equipment including printers and personal computers for various tasks.
