Champlain Insurance Group/ WestCongress Insurance Services LLC is a Surplus Lines insurance producer with authority to bind commercial general and excess liability insurance policies on behalf of our affiliate, Champlain Specialty Insurance Company (AM Best A- VII). We are in need of a Data Engineer to join our team in the Boston Area.

Responsibilities

The Data Engineer will report directly to the Principal Economist and be supervised by the Senior Vice President. The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience working with complex datasets in a data engineering role. In the short term, the first and highest priority task will involve ingesting and organizing data that is currently stored in an unstructured fashion in a legacy system. In the longer term, the candidate will be responsible for more typical data engineering tasks in order to maintain and add to the historical dataset that gets created in the first phase. The successful candidate will be open to learning about new systems and processes, including systems for error identification and process automation. Final round candidates will be expected to interview on-site in Boston.

Tasks:

• Data engineer will lead and audit the process of capturing, transiting, and transforming unstructured data currently residing in legacy policy administration systems. This will likely involve the evaluation of third-party tools and software as well as overseeing manual processes where needed.

• Data engineer will work directly with Principal Economist to clean and prepare data ingested from legacy systems as well as develop processes to ingest new data as it comes in.

• Data engineer will work closely with designers of AI-enabled underwriting systems to build data pipelines and ensure data used for training is representative, relevant, and trustworthy.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the basic architecture and performance limitations of modern databases is expected, as is familiarity with typical ETL processes.
• Proficiency with SQL and Python is expected. Proficiency in R is a plus.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. with a focus on coding, analytics, utilizing large datasets, and so on)
• Strong critical thinking skills and a willingness to seek out and learn new tools, processes, etc.
• Ability and willingness to travel (10% or less)
