The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. The Opportunity
As a member of the Bioengineering Platform, the successful Associate R&D Engineer will apply their engineering training and creative mindset to design, build, assemble, and test novel instrumentation for biological research and human health applications.
As a member of the bioengineering team, they will work on projects such as:
  • A portable, AI-powered imaging cytometer to diagnose malaria and other bloodborne diseases
  • Building laboratory automation tools to support projects such as OpenCell
  • Supporting Rapid Response applications requiring portable instrumentation for remote, low-resource settings
You will
  • Help design, build, test, and collect data from custom scientific instruments
  • Develop software for instrument control and data analysis
  • Develop, train, test, and deploy machine learning models for disease recognition and other biomedical applications
  • Perform optical microscopy and other technical laboratory experiments
  • Perform basic preparation and handling of biological specimens in the wet lab (can be learned on the job)
  • Adapt to rapidly-evolving hardware, software, and experimental protocols
  • Document all work and experimental results with diligence and accuracy
  • Take part in writing scientific publications and patent applications
  • Provide critical feedback to improve designs
  • Adhere to all safety rules, procedures, and protocols
You have
Essential -
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical work experience
  • Minimum one year of hands-on hardware project experience. Must be able to provide detailed accounts of previous hands-on experience building and/or working with hardware devices.
  • Basic machine shop experience (drilling, milling, lathing, etc.)
  • Proficiency in CAD (ex. OnShape, Solidworks)
  • Familiarity with electronics and PCB design
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Experience developing and deploying machine learning models
  • Highly collaborative, team-oriented, and an effective communicator
  • Willing to learn new methods, protocols, technologies, and software as needed to fulfill our goals
Nice to have -
  • Expertise in other programming languages (C , Java, Matlab)
  • Basic proficiency in the wet lab is desired, but can also be learned on the job
  • Soldering, PCB assembly, and electronics test and measurement skills (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, etc)
  • Knowledge of optics/microscopy
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub requires all employees, contractors, and interns, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster vaccine dose, if eligible, by their start date. Compensation
  • $80,000 - $95,000
