Job GoalThe school Nurse is responsible for providing, within the professional registered nurse scope of practice, overall direction and coordination of health services by facilitating a climate of health, safety, and well-being at their school site. The school nurse will provide our students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens, providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Arizona RN license required
  • BSN Preferred
  • Two years of nursing experience required
  • Current BLS certification
  • Must be able to move about campus in case of emergencies; may have to do some heavy lifting and transporting of students.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and make sound judgments and decisions in a wide variety of situations under pressure
  • Knowledge of and adheres to all policies, regulations, and rules.
Physical Requirements
  • The school Nurse must be able to perform the following duties: stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, sitting, finger or manual dexterity, repetitive finger motion, speaking, hearing, seeing (with correction), focusing ability, and other factors applicable to the job.
  • The school Nurse may be subject to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, blood-borne pathogens, and loud noises.
  • Health Services Staff will be required to lift or exert up to 30 lbs. of force to move objects occasionally, lift or exert 20 lbs. of force to move objects frequently, and lift or exert 10 lbs. of force to move objects constantly.
Core Job Functions
  • Delegation and training of medical procedures, in accordance with state nurse practice acts, to unlicensed assistive personnel, paraprofessionals, and teachers in the classroom for students who are medically fragile.
  • Serves as the direct link between physicians, families, and community health care services and agencies to enhance the quality and continuity of health care for all students.
  • Assumes the responsibility for appropriate intervention, management, and/or referral of all students.
  • Provides relevant health instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, teachers, and others concerning a variety of acute and chronic health problems, first aid, diseases, and other health-related topics.
  • Upholds professional standards, laws pertaining to health and/or nursing care, and district policies.
  • Assists the school staff/administration in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating school health programs.
  • Assists school personnel in establishing safe and sanitary conditions in the schools.
  • Collaborates with parents and other care providers in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care and related school health activities.
  • Utilizes established nursing processes to assess, analyze, plan, implement, record, and evaluate all nursing care.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established school district first aid procedures.
  • Implements school policies regarding communicable diseases and infection, including exclusion and readmission of students.
  • Monitors chronic illness and other health problems in students by preparing to implement and evaluate nursing care plans when appropriate.
  • Assumes responsibility for the identification and referral of students requiring further medical, dental, or psychological care.
  • Provides for the performance of physical assessment of children on an as-needed basis.
  • Advises school staff regarding modification of educational programs and/or environment to meet the health needs of individual students.
  • Applies methods designed to motivate children to participate in assuming responsibility for their own health care.
  • Advises teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.
  • Identifies and reports suspected child abuse and neglect per applicable laws and school district policies.
  • Identifies and reports suspected substance abuse and neglect per school district policies.
  • Monitors and records immunization data per applicable laws and school district policies.
  • Participates in all in-service training programs.
  • Attends committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum.
  • Maintains accurate and complete school health records.
  • Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice and participation in research.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Participates in evaluation to assure the quality of nursing care provided for students and staff.
