Job Description

Job Title: Exceptional Children Floating Teacher

Salary Schedule: Certified Teacher Salary Scale Local Supplement

Reports To: Director of Instructional Services

Position Summary

The function of this position is to serve as an itinerant EC teacher as needs arise. Responsibilities may include temporary absences, IEP meeting coverage, homebound services, compensatory services and long-term vacancy coverage when no appropriate substitute is available (including substitutes or building level staff). This position may also provide direct compensatory services as directed by the Director of Instructional Services. The position may provide support to long-term substitutes who are not licensed EC teachers in classrooms across the district.

Essential Duties

  1. Providing high quality direct specialized instruction to students according to students individualized education programs in assigned EC resource classrooms while regular EC teacher is absent.

  2. Collaborate with EC Financial Analyst and Human Resources to develop and maintain a list of long-standing vacancies in schools, including substitutes, teacher return dates and managing a detailed log of services provided and services missed due to student or teacher absences.

  3. Design and deliver professional learning supports for less-than-fully prepared/qualified substitutes in EC classrooms of long-standing absences and create weekly lesson plans and methods to monitor progress on IEP goals.

  4. Review and implement EC teacher's routines, procedures, lesson plans, and curriculum objectives as assigned

  5. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants to support student learning in the absence of the regular EC teacher.

  6. Developing IEP’s that are strength-based as well as child and family centered for overall educational improvement. Participating in IEP meetings as required.

  7. Ensure the program of instruction meets the individual students' goals and objectives on their IEP plans and is aligned with Standards.

  8. Collaborating with other school-based staff to implement assigned student’s IEP’s.

  9. Modify and administer classroom-based and assessments to document student's progress.

  10. Writing quarterly progress reports (IEP progress reports and curriculum progress reports).

  11. Collaborating with related service providers, exceptional children teachers and specialists, district curriculum staff, ML teachers, and students’ parents to plan for student needs and to ensure skills are generalized across settings in assigned classrooms.

  12. Facilitate a collaborative relationship with classroom teachers, assistant teachers, and dedicated aides to support students’ needs and ensure IEP is being implemented with fidelity in assigned classrooms.

  13. Will support new or assigned teachers to navigate EC processes and ECATS.

  14. Participating in eligibility and annual IEP plan meetings by presenting information, completing essential paperwork, and assisting with note taking for students in assigned classrooms.

Collaborating with curriculum coaches to plan orientation and professional development sessions.

  1. Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • NC Teaching License in special education; Adapted Curriculum license preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, psychology, related services, or a related field;

  • 5 to 7 years of experience working with exceptional children either as a teacher or in an administrative capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of K-12 Extended Content standards and disciplinary literacy.

  • Evidence of understanding characteristics of adult learners.

  • Highly skilled in collaboration with diverse populations of educators & students. 

  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board finds appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. 

  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.

  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on the telephone.
